Parking Brake Help...

Parking brake does not hold on new to us '02 2500 Cummins. Is there an adjustment or did the last owner smoke them? Thanks!

There is an adjustment in both the parking brake cable itself and also the internal adjustment on each wheel.

I would open the brakes up and do an internal adjustment to take up as much slack as possible then adjust the cable as necessary if needed.

You don't mention if you have discs or not, I'm assuming you do. It's simple to do just takes a little disassembly.

Rear discs. If I have to take the rotors off to do the adjustment, shouldn't I just go ahead and by new parking brake shoes anyway?

You could replace them while your in there, but at over 200,000 miles, I'm still on my original factory shoes.

Unless the previous owner drove around with the park brake engaged, they shouldn't really be worn to any great extent unless you have a rear axle seal leaking then that one side would be toast. Even so, a couple of cans of brake cleaner and they are good to go.

Takes about 10 minutes to pop one side apart and take a look, if you need them, replace them, if not adjust them and go for it.

The cable under the door is preset and used to adjust the pedal position and feel only. Here is a thread that has diagrams and pictures of the adjuster locations.

I took mine apart to clean and anti-siezed the adjusters, they were pretty stiff. Haven't had to touch them since, been around 50K miles since that project.
