Outboard Brake pads worn.

Hi, I don't use my truck much and I'm doing way to many brake jobs. Last summer I went all out and and got Raybestos S slot rotors wich I really like, I got the matching pads wich are already mostly worn (outboard pad only), I got Russel stainless braded hoses, and remanufactured calipers. I even got the stupid splash shields. I lubed all the slides, pins, bushings etc but I'm still killing my pads prematurly.

Any Ideas as to what I should try next?

Oh the Master Cylinder is only a couple years old.

Make the rear brakes do more work by installing 37337 brake cylinders in the rear and adjust the rear brakes often, the self adjusters don't always work.
Easy, cheap job

I was thinking about this but since I just had a friend do the rears and he put in new cyls I decided to put it off. I'll give it a try while I'm rotating tires.

Thank you.

I picked up 37337 wheel cyls from Carquest for 10 bucks a piece, maybe install them today but Im still wondering. Is everyone having the same issue with the outboard pad wearing at twice the rate of the inboard pad?

Mine wear pretty evenly, sounds like a caliper hanging up....

What you need to do, instead of just lubing the pins, is remove the rubber slide bushings, and hone out all the rust in their bores down to bare shiny metal. Then replace the slide bushings, and reinstall the pins.

The thing is, that when you have the caliper off, it feels like the slide pins are perfectly free and smooth. Then when the caliper heats up, the rust in those slide bores expands about ten times more than the metal does, and those slides can't move properly anymore. Remove that rust in the slide bores and it will make a big difference to how the pads wear.

I'll try to remember that when I'm back in there. Thanks.

The type of lube used is critical as well. The proper brake specific lubricant will make a large difference. For years I used never seize, and recently a friend put me on to using lube from napa made just for brake slides, etc. It does not get gummy when it warms as the silver never seize can do.

Also, thanks for the input on the rusted bits expanding faster Torque.

I use cheap, round wire brushes that are designed to be used in a drill to clean mine out before each relubing.
