Noise

If I'm on the wrong thread I apologize but, I would like to quite the cab of my truck. I make a lot of long runs and it's difficult to hear the radio or talk over the engine. Question. What is the best sound deadening substance you've used And did you use it under the hood as well as in the cab??

As funny as it sounds- I'd start with a resonator in your exhaust.
The stock and a lot of aftermarket exhausts cause a resonance in the rear sheetmetal of the cab that can become deafening.
Either damp the resonance at some other place or avoid it by getting an exhaust that does not emit at the frequency.

To test, get a plastic bag ( 5-10 gallons), fill it with wet cloth and lean it against the rear sheetmetal of your cab- quiet- get resonator- still loud- I was wrong, search for different remedy.

I know this may be a little late in responding, but a few years back I bought a roll of material from either Lowes or Home Depot that has adhesive on the backside and is about 1/8" or more thick, about 4" wide and is rubber-like to dampen sound. I did it primarily to quiet noise that might enter the rear of the cab so I could hear things better (music and conversations). I removed the rear seat back and placed 2-3 strips of this material across the back wall. I got the idea while searching for inexpensive sound deadening solutions online and found this recommended on some car audio websites from folks doing installs, saying this was as effective as the expensive stuff that is advertised as being specifically for car audio applications. I don't recall the exact product name off-hand, but it was a normally stocked item at the time.

Get the 4" pipe on there and route it out to the very back of the truck. For whatever reason, 3" has been louder for me.

Use a straight-thru muffler or none at all. I've found this to be the quietest arrangement (in-cab-wise) on my 1stgen.

I find these "cab noise" threads odd because I think my cab is pretty quiet. I can have quiet conversations and even listen to the radio turned down low. I've even taken decibel tests just to be sure and the numbers dont lie. Its barely louder in the cab of my truck than it is in my other cars.
The straight pipe exhaust is definitely the loudest.....but the engine noise is a close second. The VP engines are just very loud...
So I wonder why some people would have a noisy cab unless there's things that Dodge did which we're not aware of. One thing I have heard of is, open the hood and look/feel down inside the fender towards the cab. You should feel a plastic bag thingy that feels like a partially deflated balloon. If there isnt anything there then the noise of the engine will enter the cab down on the side of the floorboard area behind that inside plastic kick plate cover.
