Need some "how-to" Help!!
hey guys, usually post in the First Gen forums, but need some help with a second gen truck.
My son-in-law recently purchased a 1996 3500 4WD...
He was going down the road yesterday and it started cutting out on him, wouldn't stay running at an idle.
he had it towed to a shop and they have advised him it is the lift pump and quoted him over $300 for the R&R.
How different is the 2nd Gen pump from the first gen pump?
Wheres the cheapest place to get one and what else might cause this sort of issue?
I have already advised him to replace the fuel filter first.
how difficult is replacing the pump on a 2nd Gen?
any info will be appreciated!!!

Fuel pressure test , should be about 18-22 idle , 28-36 2,000 RPM , if not , over flow valve , this is what makes or regulates the pressure at the return to tank from main pump , pinching slowly the return line to see if pressure comes up tells you if the OFV is bad , and Lift pump also , if pressure comes up with pinch , that says OFV is bad & LP is working , if pressure does not come up , it could be that the LP can not make that much pressure .
Prices can double , I bought my LP & OFV for about $145 including sh. , everything is going up but this guy is probably still a good price [ Marty Tompkins - Precision Diesel injection & Turbo inc - 888-734-7349 ] , I've seen other pay close to $300 , parts only .
Your quote seems high , or missing some info , its not a big deal to R&R a LP , it can be a pain , starter in the way , and it can be a pain to get out of the way .
Many shops charge a min 1 hr , $100 per hr , to diagnose , then maybe a min for R&R , so $300 depending on the details is questionable .
For the cost & hassle I would say that if either is bad & both are original , replace at the same time .
For a shop that works on these trucks & knows them , they should be able to diagnose & R&R both parts in less than 1 hr , more that 2 is getting too much , if that is all thats going on .

I second replacing the fuel filter first, its amazing what can happen if you get a bad tank of fuel. If that doesnt help you can buy the pump from a case tractor dealer for like $60 or $70, they used the same 5.9 cummins in many models of tractors, cant think of one right now, but tell the guy at the counter its for a 5.9 cummins and they should be able to pull it up. I found that out after I had already bought mine from here for $80 + $20 shipping http://www.pensacoladiesel.com/index...oduct_id=30102
It isnt that hard of a job, I did mine laying in a gravel driveway when it was spitting rain and snow in a little over an hour. The hardest part is getting the starter down and the getting the fuel lines off(not alot of room to see or turn a wrench in there) I also have a couple pics that I pulled up on service computers at school that might help you but I cant get them to upload on here so if you want I can email them to you just send me a pm with your email. Good luck
