Leaking Steering Pump

Hi everyone, I posted this question in another thread but never had a reply so I will post my own thread regarding this forthcoming repair. Found my power steering pump to be leaking. So now that the swearing is all done, what is my next course of action? Do I assume it is merely a seal or something worse? I want to be prepared before I pull the unit. I have read that a double lipped seal is the way to go but what else could I be looking at as far as repairing and replacing? Also, what is a good source for repair parts and if anyone could guide me to resource for information regarding this type of repair, I would be quite grateful. I have done lots of repairs on my truck but never this before so talk to me like I am stupid because in this case, I am. Thank you!

How do I know if the leak is coming from the steering pump or the vacuum pump? If it is the steering pump leaking, do I need to remove the whole assembly including the vacuum pump to repair it? Do I need to rebuild both halves of the unit at the same time? I have a lot of questions but I guess anyone who has been there will know how to advise me. Thanks!!

If it's oil it's the vacumm pump. If powerstering fluid, you will need the power steering pump or seal kit. You will want to pull both as an assembly and since it's out I would recommend reseal kit on the vacumm pump eitherway.

Hi mr bill, Thanks for your response! It's light oil so it must be power steering fluid. I see the wisdom in rebuilding them both as long as they're out. There is next to nothing regarding the rebuilding of these units in Haynes or even the Technical Service Manual so as I go along, I will take photos to refer to so it all goes back together correctly. Can you recommend a manufacturer of quality kits or a source for same? I REALLY appreciate your input, thank you!

Before you rip it out, check to make sure your Power steering lines are not either rotted or cracked in the steel portion. On my Brown one, I thought for sure I had a seal leaking, only to find out the portion of the line that came out of the pump, prior to the rubber hose had cracked.

Good point patdaly. Thank you for making me check the hoses as it could have saved me a lot of work however on close inspection, mine is definitely leaking between the vacuum pump and the steering pump. Going to be tight removing the unit and I expect to loose some skin getting the assembly out. So, as long as they are both out, I will try to reseal both units. I could still use some guidance on a source for good seals and or part numbers. Thanks for your help!

Even though their website doesn't say it they also deal with PS pumps, call them www.fixinrams.com
Rebuilt PS pumps aren't as expensive as you would think and are the way I always go.
That's probably why the manuals don't talk about rebuilding them yourself.

Thank you infidel for the link to "Fixin'Rams". I took a look around the site and it looks like they have what I need there. I will give them a call.
Cheers!
