Hinge Pin replacement

I went out and bought a set of help brand hinge pins for my 99 ctd quad cab. When I went to get started I looked at the pins on the door and they look riveted or pressed on from the factory. I need help before I dive in and reck something. I did a search and came up with nothing for my truck. Just curious if someone has directions on how to replace the pins or maybe know where a set of instructions are I could get.

Thanks for quick response fueling around. The directions look pretty straight forward. One more thing, to get the hinge pin out after it is off the door, do I just grind the head off the top or bottom of the pin then knock it out. Thanks again.

Mine fell out the bushings were so worn. Just give it a tap with a hammer to release.

take out hinge
replace bushings
install hinge.

OK I had my fun and you got in your poke. Yes, I tend to get a bit wordy on my posts. Actually heading out the door so I just wanted to post something to get your attention.

I copied these instructions written by ? and posted on ??

These are very nice instructions to get the hinge out of the truck. Depending on which kit you pick, the drill size instructions do change.

Use a 13 mm. wrench and remove the 2 nuts and 1 bolt that hold parking brake mechanism in place.

Block up driver’s door. I Set a Bucket with a piece of plywood under the open door to support it. Only remove 1 hinge at a time!

With a putty knife peel off 2 inch square black patch over hole in doorpost behind where the brake mechanism was.

In the exposed hole where you peeled off patch is a bolt that takes a 13 mm socket, short 1/4" drive extension and ratchet to remove.

Remove 2 bolts that hold hinge to door.

With long 1/4" drive extension, reaching between door and fender remove remaining 2 bolts from door hinge to cab.

Knock out hinge pin and old bushings.

Use a letter R or an 11/32 drill, drill the top hole in the half of the bracket that bolts to the cab

Using a 7/16 bit drill out the top hole in the half of the bracket that bolts to the door.

Replace bushings and pin using Motormite or Help part number 38382 Kit or Doorman part # 702-275.

Drill 1/8 hole in the hinge pin and insert cotterpin so hinge pin remains intact.

Replace hinge on truck using paint lines as a guide for proper alignment.
I used a universal "help" kit but don't remember the P/N. I think it was a GM set as the bushings matched what I put in my old chevy van years back. The reason I needed a universal kit was one bushing was gone and the hinge hole was worn past the diameter of the bushings in the 38382 kit.

I ended up driving 60 miles RT to get a universal kit and picking up a headlight adjusting bolt in one of the mommy van tires.
I wrote all my revised instructions on the printed sheet, but it was tossed in the recycle bin.

I'll be doing the passenger door in the next few weeks and write down the drill numbers from my version and re-post instructions.

Ok, thanks, I know, you were just fueling around.

Is this what causes the door to drop a little near the striker pin? I grab the door and try to move it around, not loose. Just have the door drop. I figure it has to be the pins.

I had the HELP kit in my hand the other day. Only about 5 bucks for the kit. The kit was specific for the Dodge. Just was not sure about the install.

Thanks again for the info. Kevin

The Dodge kit will work ONLY if the bushing are just loose. Mine had worn through and elongated the hole in the hinge. That's why I used the big GM style bushing.

Yes the door doesn ont have to be noticeavly loose to have worn pins/bushings. I just noticed a bunch of air leak around the top of the door. When it hit the striker it was shot.

I'm heading to the auto parts store today and will get the kit I used last time. I'll post the kit number and drill out sizes.

just ... fueling around
