Gen 1 or 2 for long-distance trips with truck camper?

Nice camper! They don't build them like that any more (Copper? Brass?). I just purchased a second-hand Phoenix camper for my 6' box. 'Build 'em cheap' is the watchword nowadays.
Congrats!

I love the Alaskans--I have a 1969 8 ft. non-cabover, and my 2000 quad-cab handles it beautifully. Your 10 footer of course will work the rear suspension a bit more than my 8 footer, but not by any significant amount.
Good find!

Found my truck!
Hi again all.
Well, my traveling rig now has all the necessary elements. Picked up a nice 96 Ram 2500 Cummins 4x4 ext. cab locally, only 60,000 miles. Was used by a senior couple to tow a 30 footer occasionally.
Anyway, look forward to putting the Alaskan on its back next Spring, and heading out for initial trips to get used to it.
Thanks again for all the help and encouragement.

Wow you scored on that 96 12 valver, what gear ratio is it?
I almost bought that same type truck , but it had 4:10 gears, ended up with a 99 4x4 auto with 3:30 gears. Still wish I had a 12valver

Mine's got the 4.10 gears in it. I would have preferred otherwise, but the two nice trucks I looked at, both of which were used for towing 5th wheels, were configured such. I assume, probably because it's the most effective gearing to pull a large trailer with. I won't be towing a 5th wheel, but carrying a slide-in camper on the back, so will see how it goes.
The O/D works well on it, and with it on, the engine revs around 2000 at 60mph, which sounds good to me.
Based on other threads I consulted on the gearing issue, it didn't seem to make a LOT of difference (MPG wise) whether you had 4.10 or other gear ratio in there (maybe 2 MPG). So I was advised that the gearing was not a make or break issue, and I went with the best truck I could find, which happened to be this one (low miles, 12 valve, good-running, clean).

You could put 35" tires on that no problem with 4:10s. Mine with the 3:30s would realy kill it with 35s especialy in mountainous areas and towing loads. Im running 33" tires and tach 1800 rpm at 65mph. I have to take it out of OD, even with no load, to go up the windy mountain roads where I can only go 40-50 mph

I had a 91 dodge d350 with a sleeper cab on it and seating for 2 people upfront in the 2 bucket seats and 4 people on the rear bed/seat. and it also have an 8ft bed also. it is 2wd and just pushed 200,000 miles with a bone stock motor.
I would have made you a deal on this truck.
