Fog Lights

Hey I know they say that they couldnt put the fog lights on the automatics in at least 1998 because the transmission cooler is in the way but, I have wires that look like they would run fog lights because they end near the holes and theres a switch inside the cab. So I was just wondering if anyone has succesfully installed aftermarket fog lights. I sorta remember reading something about it but, I am looking for cheap fog lights. Does anyone have links or part numbers if they bought them from online stores or autozone or anything? I think theres room in there to get some in but it would be easier if somone knew which ones would fit the first time rather than guessing. Thanks

Re:Fog Lights

I have a friend that bought some for a junk yard the carried aftermarket parts. The aftermarket were cheep, so he bought them, now he don't like the way they shine so he was some orginal equipment. Seems to me he paid less the $50 for them. I know they look like orginal equipment. I think there over a 100 from the dealer.

Re:Fog Lights

Big rectangle fogs look good in the rectangle openings. Thats what I had in a 96 Ram and worked very good.

I have not tried to find any "factory" types yet but I to saw the connectors for the fog lights so I assume they have the connector near the OD switch with is available to be replaced.

Let us know what you find out. Srigs

Cool do you have any pics of your truck? I'm still looking so I'm open to new ideas.

Re:Fog Lights

go to wal-mart and get some there, i know that they have some 50 watt that will fit in the factory holes, the stock fogs from the factory are only 35 watts and the ones from wal-mart are only $40

Re:Fog Lights

is it likely that if my truck does not have the switch for the lamps in the cab next to the od there is no wires in the bumper? or would there be wires in the bumper and all i would have to do is run the leg for the switch

Re:Fog Lights

The connector for the fogs is mounted on the forward frame cross member, down low. It's mounted on the rear side I guess to stay out of direct salt spray. I wanted to replace my factory fogs after the installation of my front bumper. But, I didn't want to invest a lot of money if they were going to be damaged being mounted where I wanted them to be. So I went to Wally World, and got a set of "Burners" 8) for 20 bucks! One thing of note. If indeed you have the factory wiring for fogs, the lights you decide use must be isolated from ground at their mounting point. I had to isolate mine from ground by using RTV silicone instead of screws. To check this, use an ohm meter, and touch the mounting bracket and the black wire. If you get continuity, you have to do what I did. After seeing how they well they hold up there, I'm going to replace the cheapies with PIAA's. You also get what you pay for. The light from these things stink, and the frame is rusting after only 2 months.

Re:Fog Lights

The only problem I have with the factory fog lights is you have to buy the factory bulbs for $14/bulb. One of mine blew out and I tried 3 different aftermarket set of lights (correct part number) and none of them worked. Bought a factory bulb, wa la. It works. Made me kind of > that I had to go through Dodge to get a friggin bulb.

Not sure what kind of problems you ran into there but I went to AutoZone and got some #894's. They are plug-in replacements for the stock 896's. The stock 896's are 35W. The 894's are 50W. Mine work great and are quite a bit brighter. They were $6.95 ea. ;D

I went to AutoZone today with this information and found out that something is wrong here. I went in trying to get the 894 bulbs but I noticed that they didn't look like the bulbs that are on my truck right now. It's a 2001 2500 4WD. Furthermore, I believe that the computers at AutoZone showed that my truck requires the 893 bulbs to match the ones currently in it. This was odd too because when I took the factory bulbs out, they're labelled as 896s.

Another odd thing was that unlike Rattle_Rattle said, the 894 bulbs aren't 50 Watt bulbs. They're 37.5 Watt bulbs. This didn't really matter to me though because they looked nothing the bulbs I currently had.

Anyway, what I actually wound up doing was going to Pep Boys (because one of the guys at the Tyler AutoZone was a total jerk to me and I decided not to patronize that business any longer) and looked at the connectors on the two kinds of 8XX bulbs they had to compare with the 896 that came out of my truck. The 886 bulbs were 50 Watts and the connectors looked the same as my factory bulbs so I bought one to try. Voila! It worked! And it was noticeably brighter than the factory bulb (when in the light housing)! So I bought a second one and am now running Sylvania 886 50 Watt bulbs in my fog lights.

Moral of the story here? Your mileage may vary.

I had a '99 that didnt come with any so I went to Wal-Mart and bought a set of Diamond Blues and installed them in the round holes. If your truck didnt come with fog lights your holes arent as big as the ones that did so you will have to get a new plastic peice or just take a die grinder to enlarge your holes, that is what I did and it worked great. BTW it is a lot easier to take your bumper off to do this project, and when you put your bumper back on be sure to get it on straight. I have seen a few trucks with bumper sag and it looks rediculous IMO.
