driver's side quad door

The quad door on my 1999 won't open, it seems to be sticking on the bottom latch only, when i pull the handle and nudge the door the top seems to unlatch but not the bottom- anyone run into this and know how to fix it??

thank you,
Patrick

I'll be watching this thread pwregan because my door is doing the same thing. I have to reach in and open the door from the interior handle. Looks like a trick to remove the door panel and get inside to make the repair.

Check the bolts holding the lower latch in the door. I've seen them come loose and cause problems opening the door.

get it open and pull the panel and see if the rod fell off the handle or the latch. if the rods are in place then replace the latch.

you will need to get the door open. with that said......... try to get the corner of the panel loose in the location of the latch and carefully bend it out of the way enough to reach inside and feel for the rod coming from the handle to the latch. if it is loose then that maybe the problem. loose as in flopping around. (if flopping then feel for the lever on the latch that the rod connects to and move it to open the latch).
either pull up toward the top of the door or push it down toward the bottom. it's been awhile since i have worked on one so not sure which direction to move it.
one way or the other should open the latch. once open use your door panel removal tool and a philips screw driver to finish removing the trim panel. if it has never been off befoerthen the clips will be tough to get out and you may break a couple. don't worry you can get new ones at most auto parts stores cheap.
once the panel is off peel off hte vapor barriers and inspect the rods and linkages for missing or broken parts. if none found then the problem must be the latch.

let me know what you find.
oh, did you try the interior handle? lol

I just had to adjust my cargo door. There is a metal rod running from the handle to each (upper & lower) latch. Rod is held to the handle by a spring clip. Rod can come loose or work its way down so that it doesn't engage the latch. Easy fix - after you get the door open & remove the panel. Panel is held on with 2 or 3 metal clips (rear most window high) and plastic push rivets. Clips & rivets pull free.

Thanks for doing the search, Lurch, that info will help too! Since mine opens fine with the interior handle, I don't think it's the rod. Probably the leading edge flapper handle has a problem. I'll tear into it tomorrow.

check how the rod connect the outter handle.

the inner handle might move the mechanism more than the outer handle.

I have the same problem..the rod snaps in the mechanism..it does this in several positions.
if its too low the upper latch may work but the lower will not let go..

remove the outer handle( the one between the doors)..lift the lower rod..does it open. yes change how it connects in the mechanism..unsnap and move up..if not..sorry don't know..

Hi dkenny, after pulling my door apart, I found the upper rod (blue arrow) needed to be shortened as you suggested. Also, the little bolt (red arrow) that holds the handle mechanism together was way too loose. It has to be a little loose or the mechanism won't work so I put threadlock on it and tightened it just enough so that it didn't bind. Those bloody plastic trim attaching barbs clips are the pits! Anyway, door handle works fine now. Thanks everyone!
