Door lock switches acting up

About half the time I go to lock the doors, the switch won't work. I start switching it back and forth a bunch and it will start working again. Sometimes no problems at all. Think I've got a bad connection, or is this a common problem?

Mine has been doing it for some time, windows also. Been using spray cleaner on them and it has helped, but, starting to think it's time to replace.

Plain old contact cleaner sprayed into the switch as done it for me.

Just replaced the switches for a '98, both window switches, door lock and the mount were $34 from the dealer.

Thanks Bill, I woulda never dreamed they were that cheap at the dealer. I've probably spent that much on cleaner.

Yeah thanks, that's good to know. When they finally quit I'll replace them. Always something, I reckon.

Bill - I'm ashamed at you, the master of the FIX.. :-P

The switches come apart easily from the bottom. take a wire brush and go to town on all the copper/brass contacts in there..and it'll work like new.

The set I replaced had fallen apart, otherwise I would have probably just tried contact cleaner.

Do you have to take the whole door panel off to clean the contacts? How bad is it to get it reinstalled correctly, I haven't taken the panel off before, scared I'd break something and have a screwed up door forever.

Don't need to take panels off. The switches pop up out of
their holes with a little prying persuation.

what I can't figure out is how come the dealers around
here always cost twice as much as what you people say.

On the one I replaced I just removed the screw that holds down the "cup" that you use to shut the door, pulled the cup out and used my finger to push on the tab that holds the switch unit in.
