dim low beam problem. . . headlight wiring fiasco!

Well... i tried the 9007 bulbs in the 9004 slots and even when re-aimed they give off a lot of glare so i switched back. The wiring pins are different between the two bulbs so i had to re wire the sockets to accept the 9007's. After switching back and re wiring again, my hi beams on the 9004's work correctly but the low beams are dim.... like REALLY dim. I checked with a electrical light tester deal (not sure on proper name) and i have +,- for high beams (duu) but for low beams the "ground" (which is supposed to be hot all the time, correct, due to the switched ground setup????) tests a dim glow whether i'm testing from a hot or a ground source. I don't know how better to explain this but I hope someone understands... its as if the low beam wire isn't completely switching over. also when i have low beams selected, the high beam indicator on the dash has a very very VERY faint glow to it which it never had before. Thanks in advanced.

My thoughts are... maybe the hi low switch is bad. Or maybe i have it wired wrong but i doubt it. I appreciate any help

I would guess that when you put the connectors back to the 9004 configuration you miswired one of them. The fact that the high beam indicator glows dim with low beams means it's seeing a ground through a resistance such as one of the headlight filaments.

well with both bulbs out it tested fine. the "ground" was always + and on low beams the low wire was - and on hi the high beams was - but plugged one of them in and on low beam of the other it showed the ground hot, the low negative and the high beam a faint negative also. swapped in a good bulb and still same thing. finally looked at our cattle truck (01 cummins auto) and found i had the ground and the hi beam wires mixed on each of the sockets so went to give that a shot as couldn't make heads or tails of it any other way and **** look at that it works right! haha go figure... its like the common ground switches polarity between high and low beams or something screwy like that... or at least thats how i thought it was haha! SOOOOO that screwed me up pretty good. Thanks for pointin me in the right direction i was about to go buy a new hi/low switch ahh!
thanks again, TNutcher
