Battery expoloded!

I have a 2001.5 Dodge Diesel and I have had it about 6 months. Night before last I heard a loud bang, come to find out the driver's side battery exploded! It blew off the one corner so I was thankful I did not have battery acid all over the place. There was no damage other than the battery. I did replace both batteries the next day. I was just curious if anyone else experienced this or if anyone had some input as to why it might have happened.

Thanks a bunch!

Usually a result of overcharging, make sure to have your alternator checked over. Had that happen to me on a tractor I was jump starting, lessoned learned there was I don't put cables to tractor batteries anymore just straight from the truck to the starter.

Yep, had that one two. It exploded when I tried to start after about a 20 minute shutdown. Blew the entire top off. Broke the battery hold down bolt and formed the bracket across the battery into a V shape. And yes, acid was everywhere and I didn't get it all. It did eat the paint and got into some wires under the battery. That was 7 years ago and now I just buy new ones every 3 years. That is till I got the Optima Red Top. Now just keep on ticking.

I had one blow up directly in my face. as soon as it happened, I was worried: I'm already ugly enough!
Ended up getting a couple of stitches in my eyebrow from the plastic. Glad it didn't go in my eye. Didn't burn my skin at all. Went into the house and rinsed it all off.

Had the hood up because the the truck wouldn't start. A friend of mine had his face right over the battey. I said something and he took a step back as my Dad hit the key, the explosion knocked my friend of balance and he fell backwards into a shed. Then we descovered niether of us could hear. My ears rang for two days after that. The was very little acid in the battery so that wasn't much of an issue. It was about 10 at night when it happened. It made the bright ball of light I've ever seen about 2 feet above the battery.

There is a good cure.... Optima.

I have had one blow up and both sides dribble acid down the fenders. Put an Optima in each side and forget about them.

Okay, you sold me. Optima red top, are there different versions of the optima red top? If so which one do I need.

Going on 6 years on my original batteries, guess I better throw some love that way.

Its just the standard red battery purchased over the counter. You are in Washington so don't know exactly the source for you. We have them in Advanced and Sams Club here. They have a full exchange warranty for three years and then percentage.
