Auto to NV4500 swap questions..
Auto to NV4500 swap questions..
I've got a NV4500 ready to go in my truck. the auto crapped out and i'm sick of it..
I've got the pedals mounted, i've got all the auto shift linkages out, i'm working on tearing the auto cooler and lines out now..
i've removed the plastic shroud around the key switch and i've got the factory shroud from a manual truck.
How do i remove the auto shifter from the column??
where is the park interlock switch??? i need to bypass it as my truck wont crank

its an electronic switch on the drivers side of the trans.
I am about to help a friend do this as well... Can you use your autos transfer case? Also what about the computer? Did you swapt that from the manual truck also?

I dont think the computer will matter.. A few diesel shops locally tell me not to bother with it.
I can use my transfer case. I had a 241HD in my truck behind the auto. I was able to call a local parts house, Six States and they ordered me a new 29 spline input shaft. this was about 175 bucks alone but much cheaper than a manual t-case. I think the only difference is the spline count.
put the shifter in park and remove the roll pin at the base and pull the handle out. you will have to unplug the overdrive switch as well. the park safety switch is on the transmission, you will need to wire that in with your clutch switch in order to retain cruise control.
i went the same route as you and swapped out the input in the transfer case, kind of a pain but much cheaper than a different t-case. i think the DHD is heavier duty but the DLD is holding up in mine and ive seen several other ones behind NV's without trouble.
i swapped mine over last year, best thing ive done since i bought it.

OK i got the shifter out, all i have left is the tranny cooler... then i'm home free.
How do i bypass the saftey switch???
When you did yours, did your d-shafts match up?
did you install the clutch start switch?? or whatever it's called..

I just finished up the swap on my 2WD dually. I was able to reuse the crossmember, but had to use the NV4500 mount. I used another 1996 2WD as a donor truck so that was no big deal though.
Do you have access to the computer from the truck that the transmission came out of? I switched out my original computer to the computer from the 5spd truck and then the only wiring I had to do was the clutch safety switch. There is a 3-pin plug with a black and white wire. Don't worry about the other 2 colored wires. Cut off the plug and splice a wire that will run to the safety switch on the master cylinder. Then, run the other wire coming off the switch to a ground. I just ran mine to the metal bar that already had a lot of stuff grounded to it under the dashboard.
Since the auto computer was gone, I didn't have to worry about the transmission temp light coming on either.
Good luck with your swap, and let me know if I can be of any help.
