Airbag light

Hey Guys, just a quick question...unforturnatly an electrical one. So heres my problem, in my brothers 1998 12v the airbag light stays on and every few minutes the alarm will beep. I don't know very much about wiring and so I have no idea what could be wrong, so if anyone could provide me with some insight that would be great.

The one in my '95 goes on frequently and then goes off for no apparent reason. Haven't figured that one out yet either.

How long as he had the truck?

Are there airbags actually in the steering wheel and dash? Are they connected?

Sometimes when a vehicle gets an airbag deployed the repair shop will not replace them and instead just pack the steering wheel with rags and put a new cover on. Not trying to alarm you but if you do not know the history of this vehicle I would check it out!

He has had the truck for about 3 years and it was previously owned by a 70 year old guy. It has no accident history and yes the airbags are connected.

Common cause if never wrecked is a bad clock spring. Another common cause is corrosion of the wire or sensors under the batteries on each fender.

Once the light comes on it usually has to be reset by the dealer at an insane cost so most people just disconnect them. One would think they would want people to keep the bags working. They should keep the price to simply connect a diagnostic tool as low as a few bucks but they want to make a killing.

BTW I had an intermittent bag light. Replaced the clock spring which was bad and the light stayed on from then on. Also replaced sensors, bag and module. Checked wiring. Finally disconnected it.

Thanks I will give that stuff a look at, and if no luck I will probably just disconnect it then.

I replaced my clock spring about 8 years ago. At that time there was a bigger problem than the airbag light-it may have been the turn signals not working--anyway something stopped working in that area and it was because of the clock spring. But as I recall the airbag light was not a problem then.
