Will the key on/off method of getting codes work on a 1998.5??

Hey, I'm new to the site. I've had a few Dodge Ram 3500's and I'm just running into my first problems. I currently own a 2001 Quadcab 6-speed and a 1998.5 Quadcab 5-speed. The 1998.5 won't start at the moment and the check engine light has been on (I believe it's the VP and lift pump but I want to be sure before I drop the coin).

My first question is will the key on/off method of retrieving codes work on a 1998.5? I ask because I tried it and it didn't work. Any help would be appreciated. This is a great site with a lot of good information, thanks.

Yea, I guess I'll have to see if I can get someone to make a house visit and pull some codes, lol.

I think it's the VP and LP because I have all or most of the signs....dead pedal, bucking/cutting out under load, not starting, ect. I also tried replacing the fuel filter after it wouldn't start, and I am getting no fuel to the filter canister. I think I am going to try replacing the LP first to see if I can even get it to run and go from there. I appreciate the replies!

On my wifes 99 the crank positioning sensor went bad and the check engine light kept coming on, and then it didnt start one day. replaced it and all is good again. Oh ya. The tach kept going dead at times as well.

If you are getting no fuel at the canister following the bump-start key on prime method, the lift pump is south. pretty simple to figure out. Look at the voltage to the pump during the prime process and open the canster drain or unscrew one of the test plugs on the top. If the LP is working you will have fuel.......but then you said you don't I had the same no prime issue (see lost prime 98 24v) and went with Glacier's 391 Walbro pump kit Richard at Galicer is super nice and will help you any way he can.

I have had a Scan Gauge now for a few years. I use it on all of my vehicles. I put mine up on the steering column- its good for monitoring all vitals in real-time, as well as reading the ECM codes. Its a great deal for only $169 bucks.
