white smoke. Worried!
white smoke. Worried!
I have already serched this and couldn't find a good explanation. I just noticed this morning (30 degrees) Fired truck up and came back outside about five minutes later to find truck running perfectly normally but a good amount of white smoke I have never noticed this before there was a long hazy trail of white. Possibly lift pump or is this normal for a vp. Probably going to check pressure at work tommorow. Is there a good way to check pressure without buying a kit, VIA a pressure tap and guage set? thank you Very much
It shouldn't cycle for more than 5 minutes even when it's really cold. If it's cycling them driving it may be due to the PO cutting the speed limiter wire, then the ECM doesn't know the truck is moving.
the white smoke is either normal or bad. yeah, they'll smoke white for about a minute or two when cold. they'll smoke for a couple minutes while driving down the road if it's below 0* or so (even at wide open throttle when the motor's pretty warm at -20*, etc.). that's fine.
the bad white smoke is happening all of the time, or especially when the motor is fully warm. at 30*, it should only smoke for a minute or two. low fuel pressure (well, dead lift pump) is typcailly the cause in a 24v).
below 56-59* the grid heater will cycle on an off until you're driving over 15mph. it shouldn't "bog" the motor more than 100rpms. they do use a lot of juice as you'll see your amp guage go from 14 to about 7 during the heating cycle.

I was driving down the freeway when my lp died. while my truck was spudering, i looked back to check before i changed lanes and saw a ton of white smoke, then my truck died. I would check it. Good luck

The first time I started my truck when it was really cold outside, -degrees with wind chill, it poured out white smoke like an old freight train. It was plugged in and it started right up. After a few minutes it cleared out. Kind of got me concerned at first, but it was kind a cool to see that much smoke pouring out of it.

Concerned enough to walk headfirst into the smoke screen and take a big sniff.
Antifreeze you can smell, oil you can smell.
This smoke however, is comparable to tear gas.
I wouldn't suggest doing what I did, instead take a light sniff from just outside the cloud.
Perfectly normal though, as I learned from this board.

Thanks everyone the lift pump is ok. I know the white smoke is normal when cold the only thing that concerned me was that it seems to be inconsistant. Sometimes it will and others it won't. Maybe fuel quality can be in question.
wjite smoke isnt bad.....remeber we burn hydrocarbons....and the 2 biggest byproducts of hydro carbons are CO2 and H20....H20 being water and the water vapor that is condensing is infact white!! So know worries.....unless of course it is happening when its 95 degrees!!! then your in trouble!!
