Running down the highway with the tc locked-about 150*F
Running around town outside temp 90* the tranny is 180-190*F
Backing my trailer up my steep long drive-240*F

Too hot? On the hwy I would say over 160-170*F.
Ram air makes all the difference. Just pull in close behind an 18 wheeler, if you want proof. Temps will be higher if towing.

In Grid Lock... stop & go, I would shift to neutral at 200* and above and rev it up for added cooling.

Something wrong? Broken gauge?

I'm guessing your gauge is mounted in the Pan?
That takes a LOT longer to register temps, especially in colder climate.

My sensor is in the hot line coming out of the tranny and shows temp in 5 min +/-.

To test gauge....
Pull your sensor and fill hole with a pipe plug. Then dip sensor into boiling water! See if it reads 212*F/100* C.

Absolutelly correct!
The sensor should be in the hot output line to the cooler.

See this thread for more info:

And see this thread for reasons why you'll get an inacurate reading if you mount it some where else:
