What is your Tranny Temp?

Hello,

I've been running a tranny temp gauge in my automatic for awhile and got thinking the other day about some stuff. In my truck, driving around on highway my temp will be at 100 degrees. Even when driving around on highway, it takes quite a few km before it'll even register on my gauge. A few times driving around town and traffic jams on the highways I have reached around 170 I believe.

Question is, are these temps normal for daily driving and NOT towing? And should the tranny temp gauge read anything if I let my truck warm up with high idle?

Thanks!

cruising highway 100F? i think it's too low....what outside temp do you have?very cold?
in my 99 i have red 116F the lowest(cruising highway) with outside temp of 0°Celsius...but with a recon xzt and the gauge mounted on the tranny port..isn't the much accurate
170F in traffic sounds normal...

Temps outside are currently 0 to -10 celcius, so not too cold at all. I have my gauge plumbed into the line before the heat exchanger as well.

Would a bad thermostat cause delayed tranny warm up?

First question should be is where is your sending unit located? You will get a far different # with the sender in the pan than if it's where the hot line exits the tranny. Sounds like yours might be in the pan and those # are about right for there I think.

Sending unit is in the hot line before the heat exchanger:

Delayed readings in cold weather are nothing to be concerned about. Takes a while for everything to warm up to readable temps.
Some with gauges that read 150 - 400* never get a reading all winter.

Of course I cannot comment for tranny temp during cold weather, but with weather being in the upper 70's...150 degrees interstate, during similar temps outside, the tranny temp does go up during stop and go, got to love florida

that's ok i should read around 130F....it can be a false reading on the test port? I should read more w a probe on the cooler line?
i have the tranny rebuild 500miles ago...

I have a Goerend Valvebody and Torque Converter in my '99 so my temps tend to run a little warmer in traffic.
My temp sensor is in a stock HOT line w/ fitting before the Heat Exchanger.

I pulled my 12 foot V-Nose trailer loaded with 6,000 pounds of landscaping stones 140 miles at ~60 mph yesterday in 40ish degree temps.
Tranny temps at highway speeds didn't register on my 140* gauge.

Once off the highway on secondary streets with traffic lights, I got up to ~200*.
Past the traffic and back to 50ish MPH, back to <140*.

Driving back pulling an empty trailer, temp gauge never moved above 140*.

In summer heavy traffic with the AC on, I have seen temps in the 260 range.
I don't let them get that high without dropping into Neutral and apply a few revs when possible to get the temps back down.

So do you fellas think that 100 is alright for Highway Traveling? I could always cover up my front cooler and see what the temps do just for info purposes.

On the highway, tranny should be in full "lock-up" so there should be no slippage equaling very little heat.

You should be fine.

Heat is the enemy of an Auto trans.
