Why does NV4500 require "special" fluid?
Why does the NV4500 specify a different lubricant than all the other NV transmissions?
The NV 1500, 3500, and 5600 series units spec. the use of a 5w-30 oil, while the NV4500 specs. the use of a GL-4 gear oil.
Why?
Thanks.

The coefficient of friction of the Castrol Syntorq is formulated to work with the fiberous coatings on the synchros.
Many people have used other oils with a GL-5 rating without damage. Some of the additives in the GL-5 will react with the brass components at temps above around 230*F. Most people won't get their transmissions this hot.
When these transmissions are rebuilt, most shops will replace the fiberous coated synchros with uncoated brass ones. Then the choice of lubricant is less restricitive.
Some general NV4500 info:

Do a Google search for "NV4500 fiber" and some info about the synchros will come up.

Barney,
Thanks for taking the time to post a reply.
Have another question though, or should I say a more specific question than my first one:
Why does the NV4500 call for a gear oil when most other light-truck transmissions (New Venture, ZF, etc, etc..)call for either an ATF or engine oil?
Is it just a synchro issue?
Has anyone on here ran an ATF or engine oil in a NV4500?
