What Weight of Oil Are Canucks and Northern USA Guys Running?

Just trying to decide between running 15w40 Amsoil Synthetic Diesel Oil or their Series 3000 5w30 Synthetic Diesel Oil. It gets cold up her in Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Winter can be -20 Celsius / -3.99 Fahrenheit to as low as -40 Celsius / -39.99 Fahrenheit.

I've always run regular old Rotella 15w-40 and I've never had any problems, even when we got a real cold spell last year where it got 10-20 below 0... As long as the block heater stayed plugged in

If you're pushing -40 (which it does in Winnipeg & saskatoon for weeks at a time), I would use Co-Op DMO -SL 0W40 (only 5.50 a liter). Its available at any co-op agro place, it has a pour point of -57 and uses group IV base oil (which is the best). I also have a 250 watt oil pan heater that I use with the block heater. Motor warms up much faster. Make sure you also have the grill blocked off or it will NEVER warm up in town. I also changed out the power steering fluid to synthetic to minimize the whine. Do you have a high idle switch so you can manually raise the rpm? PM me if you want how I did it.

When I had my 2000, I actually took the fan off for the winter. Warmed up much faster and never overheated. Even pulling a 13,000 pound trailer at -10.

I run Amsoil Premium API CJ-4 Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil and the Amsoil filter. That way its good for 50,000 miles or once a year.

If I was in Winnipeg - Id definitey go with the Series 3000 stuff. I believe the pour point is -50F or lower

Im in Edmonton and use Amsoil Marine 15W40. Pour point is -44F.

I bounce between Rotella 0w40, 5w40 and the Valvoline Blue 5w40 for winter duty. I usually run Rotella 15w40 in the summer.

From what I have been able to find, that is a CI rated oil. Not good for anyone not running DPF delete...

What's the non-member price? (or doesn it make a difference?)

the previous owner and i have run 5W40 synthetic for years without a problem. same oil year-round. i also remove the fan, block the grill, and plug it in on the real cold days. this year i now have high idle with the flick of a switch.

one other thing to look into is the high idle re-flash at a dealer - or someone close with a smarty . . .

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
You can go to 10-30 diesel oil or 5-40 diesel syn oil.. There may be 5-30 syn oil avaliable for those -23 C and lower events. Synthetic is a definite good for our cold weather friends.

Co-op makes a CI-4 0w40 and a CJ-4 0W40. I spent ALLOT of time talking with a guy at the refinery as they have no info on their website.

Member or non-member, same price, if you're a member you might get a few dollars back.

15w40 Amsoil Synthetic Diesel Oil. Never have had starting issues, although I've never started it in temps below -20. Just -10 through -15 area, but they were effortless starts. I've been running 15w40 Amsoil Synthetic Diesel Oil for years now and love it, swear by it.

Although you do live in Winnipeg, which is colder than the coldest city in America. Depending on how you use your truck 5w30 Series 3000 might be a good idea. I've wanted to visit Winnipeg for over 10 years now.

Rotella 15w40 summer and Rotella 5w40 synthetic winter.... Thinking about just running 5w40 year round because of the higher coking point to keep the turbos happy on shut down.
