what gear?

I have a nv4500 5 speed with 3.55 gears and most of the speed limits around town are 40-50mph. Which gear would yield better mpg, 4th at 1600-1850rpm or 5th at 1100-1450rpm?

I would say 4th would be better for mileage and you truck.

I would keep the RPM's above 1500 too. 4th would be my gear of choice in that situation.

I say 4th as well. Even though my truck is an automatic (with 3.55's). I get best fuel mileage around 90km/h..say 16-1700RPM

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Fourth is choice. You are lugging the engine at speeds below 50 MPH in OD. This contributes to the 5th gear nut failure among other things.

Which one takes more throttle? If you're on flat road, 5th would be alright. If you are up and down hills (even just little ones), you'll need more throttle in 5th to maintain the same speed compared to 4th.
