What damage or wear can I expect (47RE)

Have a 99 2500 with the auto. Have had very little problems with the transmission. Recently, wouldnt shift from 3rd to 4th but a fluid/filter change solved that. Now, its doing the old 3rd to 4th gear shift back & forth at any speed between about 40-50 mph. I have 189,000 on it and regular maintenence is all I've done to it. I rarely tow anything and only only drive to/from work etc. The guy at the transmission shop says he believes its not a huge problem, just something minor... meaning not a rebuild.

My question is... Just how worn out is this transmission, with 189,000 miles. Am I a few thousand miles from rebuild or am I good to go with regular fluid/filter changes? Comments welcome.
Thanks
Craig

the "in/out/in/out" of lockup is most likely an electrical issue. RFI is being perceived as a signal to the JTEC controller. First cheap and easy is to unhook the batt cables, test the batteries, CLEAN the cable ends and batteries, perform the APPS reset procedure while your at it. This may be all you need. Beyond that with the miles you have I would be tearing down the alternator and installing brushes if the commutator isn't too worn.

On the mileage of the trans.....if it still works, run it!

I agree it's electrical: weak batteries cause that condition, in my case.

But I would not be driving between 40-50 in 4th (OD)... unless you have 4.10 rear end. With 3.55 gears that puts you well below 1500 rpm in 4th and tends to lug the engine and possibly strain the tranny.

I lock out OD till I'm over 50 mph... everything seems to run better with no negative effect I can see on mileage.

Here is a link to a post about how long autos are lasting:

And here is a link to a post about electrical issue causing your shifting problem:

I reset my APPS and it solved my shifting problem.

We just rebuilt the 47RE in one of our 3500 4x4 trucks with 315000 miles that has pulled a 50 3 car wedge its entire life. no major wear on clutches. We do change the filter at 20000 miles and do the band adjustment. Run it till it quits, but keep it in adjustment.

I was skeptical

I at first was skeptical about the APPS reset, but wow... What a simple little 35 minute job did for the shift problem. No problem at all now. Shifts smooth & strong, just like always. Much appreciation goes out to everyone who chime in to help.
Thanks!
