what is correct fuel filter change procedure for 01 24V 5.9 Cummins

What is the correct fuel filter change procedure for 2001 24V 5.9 Cummins?

I have changed the fuel filter on our 2007 Cummins, bump started and no problems. But on the 2001 it doesn't want to start now. Fuel filter canister has filled up after it was drained during the filter change, no leaks. Some other threads have said to loosen injector lines to help bleed air out. If this is needed, then I need some guidance on where and how to do this safely.

drain fuel, clean around filter housing, open lid remove filter .replace filter and Orings reinstall .close drain, bump starter to start lift pump, wait till pump stops ,do 3 times to purge air .start and hold idle at 1000 rpms for just a few seconds. as long as your lift pump is good it will start every time if you got air in it you might need to crack a injector line or 2 any one will do I go for the easyest

Where to loosen injector lines

I did the procedure correctly then. Except for cracking open a couple of injector lines. Should I just loosen one or two injector lines where they enter the top manifold?

Thank you. I will try this tonight. One flat battery to go and replace before I can try this. I appreciate the help.

still having trouble

Cracked open two of the injector lines and got a trace of fuel from one. Still won't start. Error codes from the odometer read as: P PCU then P 1693

When you bump your starter, do you hear the LP run? Is it an aftermarket lift pump? Your codes are only piggyback codes (one module has recognized a code in the other module) and don't mean anything.

Yes the Lift pump (stock) is running. Before I tried to start it, I attached the hose to the drain of the fuel filter again and verified that fuel is present there under some pressure, and yes there is. More then 2 litres came out. i know this because the two litre container overflowed well.

You need to crack 2-3 lines open and try to start it, just keep cranking it. It will start eventually. You have to close lines as soon as it starts as fuel will start flowing all over.

Finally got it running

A mechanic came over and helped. It took bleeding the inj pump at the test port on the inj pump and quite a lot of engine cranking to get it going.

He drove up to the garage with his p-pumped 12V Cummins and teased us about having a tough time getting it started.

thanks for all the help and advice. Much appreciated.
