VP44 Problems
Hi all
im having a problem with my 98.5 24 valve. About 4 months ago, I installed a FASS150 pump with filters, and it runs great. But right around the same time, I began to have trouble with hot starting. It would crank for a few seconds before firing. It progressively got worst, along with some power loss and decrease in fuel milage. After just returning from bike week pulling a pop-up, (2,100 miles round trip), it wont restart hot. It also has a lot of trouble pulling out onto the highway. Seems like it pulls the same whether the pedal is ½ way down or all in.
I’ve read that the diaphragm in the vp44 is a common problem, as well as the electronics. I think its the pump, but havent done ANY testing yet. Does this sound like a IP problem to anyone else? I am going to test for fuel psi just to make sure the pump is working correctly. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Take it into an auto parts store and have them read your codes. If you have 216, the VP44 is going out. SNOKING

i have a modis (snap on scanner) and before the trip there were no codes at all. havent gotten a chance to scan it again, but im gonna check on that monday.
i also forgot to mention the high idle problem. after a few miles, with the engine warm, if i come to a light and stop, it idles at about 950 rpm, which is higher than normal. anyone ever experience this before??

What year was it that you could do the key on-off, on-off on thing? That will show codes, but not sure if that applied to the 98-99's. Anybody know for sure?

The FSM says that the stock lift pump operates at 50% duty sycle during starting in order to help with easier starting. I have read a lot of posts that say full pressure makes it hard to start on some but not all VPs. Perhaps this is what you have. What would I do about it? Well... can you adjust the pressure on FASS at all? If yes, I would take it down to like 7 or 5 psi and try. I would not WOT it at this, just run it gently, not taking the pressure below 3-5 on the road, and to see if hot starts are any easier. Maybe it is the high performance of FASS that is playing this trick on you.

well i scanned the computer today at work, and the results are this: p1692, p1693, p0234, and p1389. i cant seem to get into the cummins computer with the snap on unit to check the p1692 and 1693 codes, but the p0234 is a overboost code. im gonna check the wastegate, and make sure everything is good on that end. i have a friend at the dealer that will let me borrow a drb and see whats up with the other 2 codes.
does the p0216 code set in the cummins computer or the mopar computer??
