The VP is the Injection Pump.
The Lift Pump is also know as the Transfer Pump and is used to bring an adequite fuel supply from the tank to the Injection Pump.

my dealer just replaced my lift pump. does the v 44 always go out when the lift pump goes?
gauges are on order, hope to find someone in the west mich area with knowledge to install them for me.

That would depend on whether there was pressure at the pump (but just low) or was the VP trying to suck fuel through the lift pump. If you had positive pressure at the pump and caught it, than you are most likely ok. The VP uses fuel for lubrication and cooling, if it has to pull fuel through the lift pump there is no extra fuel for cooling or lubrication.

like i say, i have gauges on order ,so without having gauges before i do not know what was going on. took it in to dealer for lack of towing power up hills ,would not hold in overdrive, excessive fuel usage, and cutting out as if i had shut the key off (engine continued to run just lost it's power) about the time i would get to the top of a grade.
they replaced lift pump injector pump and flashed it for a boost in power in overdrive that supposedly is available for the 2001's.

It would also depend on the driving conditions when the pump was not operational.
Hard driving, hot temps, or heavy towing could hasten the demise of the injection pump.
Unloaded commuting might not have an effect at all.

Could happen Herb, I lost my lift pump, VP-44 went a week later, that one lasted 4 weeks, and this one??????But I now have a full set of gauges, and everything is ok now.
If the lift pump caused the engine to stumble and lose power, I would suspect that the VP-44 will follow.
Just my .05
