Valve Adjustment

I am only about 10k over the milleage for the valve adjustment. Is that something I can do myself or do I have to have it done by a shop.

Here is a link to the valve adjustment process for a 12v. The process will be the same except for finding top dead center. To find top dead center on a 24v. You need to take the oil fill tube off. Once you have it off, look at the injection pump gear....you will see a scribe mark. This scribe mark is TDC when you have it at the "notch" on top of the oil fill tube hole. Adjust valves that it calls for then rotate engine 360 degrees and adjust the other half.

Some engines vary on valve adjustment. I have seen some that really benifited at 60k. But they were mostly severe duty service trucks.

According to the service manual this is to take place after 150,000 miles. But because Cummins had them on the loose side from the start I have heard of performance increase after doing it earlier. You will want to do this when the engine is less then 140 degf so the clearances will be correct. I have also heard you want to stay on the tighter side.
Intake: 0.254 mm (0.010 in) [0.152 mm (0.006 in) Min/ 0.381 mm (0.015in) Max]
Exhaust: 0.5.08 mm (0.020 in) [0.381 mm (0.015 in) Min/ 0.762 mm (0.030 in) Max]
1. Disconnect battery cables (I think they say this for everything)
2. Remove valve cover.
3. Remove the fuel pump gear access cover.
4. Bar the engine until the TDC mark on the pump gear lines up on the TDC mark on the gear housing.
5. At this position valve lash can be measured/adjusted at: Intake 1, 2, and 4 / Exhaust 1, 3, and 5.
6. Rotate the crankshaft one revolution (360*) so that the TDC mark is now at the 6 o'clock position pointing at the timing mark at that position.
7. Now measure/adjust: Intake 3, 5, and 6 / Exhaust 2, 4, 6.

The Intake rockers have a sharp angle on one side in the center of the arm with the other side of the rocker being straight while the exhaust rockers have a smooth curve on both sides although non symmetrical.
If I were you I would get a Service Manual it is in there and info on any other repairs you might want to handle yourself or at least be educated on how it should be performed. It is hard for the dealer or shop to BS you if you are informed. Here is a place to get a manual, it is a little pricey but it is worth it. https://techauthority.gltghosting.co...atalogId=10051
In the category choose “Service Manuals” then you can choose your year in the “Subcategories”.
Hope this helps.
