Valve Adjustment

Can anyone tell me when I should get my valves adjusted on a bombed truck. I have a valve or two thats making unusual ticking noise. I can hear it better when you shut the truck off. You know the last second before it stops, after you turn the key off. I have 60k on her now, and i have been noticing this the last 3-5k. Could it be the cold weather as well? Any help would be appreciated. Also, is there a particular setting they need to be at, or factory spects? I'm ignorant to valves.
Thanks,

Kimrey

Re:Valve Adjustment

I just checked my valves last weekend. I have 74K miles on my 99 and everyone of them was within 2degrees. First valve adjust.

Re:Valve Adjustment

I did my first valve adjust with Nail Bender and I had 93K on my HEAVILY bombed (see sig) '99. ALL valves were within spec, although we did adjust the 2 intake valves on #'s 5&6 as they were a little close for my comfort to being out of spec....

YMMMV 8)

Can't hurt to check though, and put your mind at ease!

Re:Valve Adjustment

That'd be a couple of thousandths there, NB.
Cut him some slack folks, he's a gearhead in training. ???

I have adjusted @ 75k intervals, but previous trucks have been stock. If I were to put some power in, I would decrease my interval, but only for good measure. This valvetrain ain't no small bolck Chev.

If you have done this sort of work before, you'll find it to be quite simple. I would recommend a service manual. It will provide you w/all the info, specs, and tools needed for the operation.

Re:Valve Adjustment

I did mine at 15k miles when I did injectors. I set the intakes at .010 and the exhaust at .020
Re:Valve Adjustment

I waited until I installed 275 injectors at 190,000+ to adjust mine. They were all within specs, some were about .003 from center of specs. Not bad for the miles. Kenny

Re:Valve Adjustment

I did mine at 45,000 miles. All were within spec, but all throughout the spec. I tightened mine down to min. spec.

Mike
