Cool Valve adjustment

It was mentioned here a few days ago that a '99-24V needs a valve adjustment at 150K. I looked again in my manual and in my Haynes book. Both say no adjustment neccessary. So what's up? Was someone just smoking crack?

If memory serves me right:

Cummins suggests valve adjustment at 100k, Dodge suggests 150k... I'd go with Cummin's suggestion: I'm assuming they might know the ISB better than Dodge

double check.. . I could be wrong.

It's not much to adjust them, right. Just do some a t TDC and others at 360 off of that. Without a dist, how do you find TDC?

Cummins always told me that these engines rarely need valve adjustment.. they told me unless there clattering bad or you ran low on oil 9 out 10 times the valves will be within standards.... both times ive check my valves they were right on the money because there hydraulic.....

There is a mark on the front of the engine that shows TDC when its at TDC you will onlt see some of them able to be checked for standards then rotate engine again and the other should be able to be checked but personally i find it waste of time if not doing osmething else requiring takign the valve cover off.... i checked them both times i changed my injectors just because there were already there infront of me.

Is there something I'm missing here??

Hydraulic lifter valvetrains don't require lash adjustments.....set them once and leave them. To my knowledge, all CTD's have solid lifters which require periodic (abiet infrequent) lash adjustments to maintain the appropriate rocker arm to valve stem clearance. I have adjusted valves a few times on a couple different CTD's and have found them to be well above the their maximum lash specs.

These are the specs I use:

Spec***********Intake**************Exhaust

Minimum****0.152 mm (0.006 inch)****0.381 mm (0.015 inch)

Standard****0.254 mm (0.010 inch)****0.508 mm (0.020 inch)

Maximum****0.381 mm (0.015 inch)****0.762 mm (0.030 inch)

These are excellent instructions on how to properly and easily set the lash on our CTD's: SETTING VALVE LASH

My owners manual says 150k. I just had it done @ 75k, PM. It's a good thing I did because the #1 adjustor screw/nut was split down the center.

The timing marks are under the fuel pump drive cover (aka, the crankcase breather).
