Vacuum pump again!

The tech from the repair shop just called. My oil leak is the vacuum pump. I replaced the vacuum pump at 40,300 miles and now have to replace it again at 190,000 miles. Is anyone else having this much of a failure rate with their vacuum pump?

What could cause this to repeatedly fail?

Thanks

Tim

If it is just an oil leak, the entire pump does not need to be replaced. All you need is a seal and a couple of o-rings. Those parts were not available to DC dealers but I have heard that they now are. If they still are not, you can definately get the parts from Cummins for very little $. The parts are also available through NAPA (if you do a search you should find the part numbers) but a few have had problems getting the correct parts, depending on the counter guy.

Read the above post. At one point, all the dealer had available to them was a new pump, not the parts to fix the current one. Even if that is still the case, you can get the parts yourself or from a Cummins dealer for probably less that 30 bucks.

If you're so inclined you can do the repair yourself, or have a good mechanic do it for you. Either way you will spend at the most a tenth of a new one. You can get reman units for about $350, but you've got to tear it down the same as replacing the seal to replace the pump. I did the repair on my 2000 and it worked great for $9.78 plus about 2 hours of time. You can find some good instructions here.

Good luck, Frank.

Failure Rate

Yes, I do think that 2 failures in 190,000 are unacceptable. So do the techs that I have talked to. They think that "something" is causing these to fail.

There are people doing what I do that have never had a vacuum pump fail and have far more miles on their Dodges than I do.

Thanks

Tim

Pardon my newbie ignorance, but what is the vacuum pump, and what does it do for our trucks?? I remember the smog days from the '70's and '80's, with air pumps and all on gassers, but I know little about what you are talking about. I have a slicked up front suspension, radiator, fan, etc. that I was told came from the oil recovery bottle, but I want to besure it isn't from this vacuum pump.

Thank you for your time.

Vac pump is down below the injection pump and has the pwr steering pump piggy backed on it. It's purpose is to provided vac for any accessories that require it since diesel engines do not create vacuum. (cruise control, 4x4 actuator, a/c vac motors)
