Question unusual shift problem

truck runs fine except after startup, it does a longer than usual 1st to 2nd shift. after that first time it will shift normally till truck is shut down, then it will do it again only the first shift cycle after startup. trucc can be cold or hot. it only does this the first sequence after startup then it will shift normally as long as it is not shut down. please help us. edit to add, it didn't do this before last thursday.

try the apps reset. unhook the batteries, key turned on, step on the throttle n let up. let sit for 30 minutes with the key on. Then take the key out, reconect batteries, turn the key to the on/run possition(do not start), slowly press the go pedal to the floor and let up, turn the key off. your done. start her up and see if that helped.

Thanks for the reply Walt. I tried that when it first happened and am goingto try it again this weekend. Maybe it'll help if I leave the batteries unhooked overnight.

...try doing your warm-up in neutral, this (I've been told) gets the tranny fluid circulating; True or not, it solved the issue for me....

I don't know if this applies to late model trucks but I did the neutral shift right after start thing and waited for the oil pressure to get up before leaving...gave the torque converter a few seconds to fill on my '92 for 4 yrs.
It just got to be a habit ...I didn't mind the additional start-up chore.

even after driving all day if i stop and turn off the key for just a second, it will hold that long first gear shift that first cycle after startup. then it will shift normally as long as the truck is not shut down. Bill from DTT told me to try getting the proper adjustment on the kickdown cable and if that doesn't solve it, replace the solenoid and transducer in the tranny. the parts should be here next week.

Oh, by the way when you do a apps reset, wait until all your dash indicator lights go out before you start to depress the throttle petal.

ok got scheduled with the dealer for the 6th. i really didn't expect too many answers because a search back to the beginning only turned up one occurence of the exact same problem and no one, not even the webmaster knows what happened to the guy (i think his name was ebhern or something close). hope the solution is a reflash or speed sensor you know not to much $$.

Where is this sensor, and is there any way to test these? Is it an expensive part?

trans output speed sensor , located drivers side rear(tailshaft housing) $25.00 should throw a P0720 code. the day we took ours to the dealer, they couldn't do diagnostics because all available techs were doing other vehicles. i told them we would reschedule and took the truck home. just on a try and see effort i changed the sensor (5 minutes) and said a prayer. prob solved.
