Turning OD on and off.

Whenever I go to turn off my overdrive on my truck or go to turn it back on I have to hold it down for a few seconds for it to turn on or off. I'd say a at least 4-5 seconds and it's pretty irritating and doesn't seem normal. Anybody else have this problem and if it's not normal what is the fix?

Never had, seen or heard of that problem.... and I use my button 5-6 times a day (always off under 55 mph).
Replace switch...can't be a lot of $$$! (famous last words).

Yeah, I didn't think it was normal and it gets irritating when I try to use it. I have to keep looking down until I see the light go on or off and I hate taking my eyes off the road for it.

Where is the switch and how hard is it to replace?

The switch is located in the end of the gear selector. Just pop the cover off with a small flat head screw driver and remove the switch the same way. Really easy. They just push in and pop out!

VERY easy to change out to OD switch...it's all in the end of the shift lever.
-Use sharp knife to pry off retaining ring on end of shift lever.
Gently pull out button and unplug switch from wiring harness... being careful not to bend the 4 prongs.
-Plug in a new switching unit!

Sorry, guess MG types faster than I do

But seriously... What year is your truck again?

I knew I'd get that I thought maybe the button I was pushing led to something else that may be malfunctioning.

The year is 98 with the 24 valve. The button seems like it works, it doesn't get stuck or anything like that. I just have to keep it depressed forever for it to work.

Maybe...but eliminate the easiest first. Try cleaning the prongs and reinserting? Worth a try.

It's actually an 'Overdrive Off Switch'..... it interrupts a normally completed curcuit... so if your OD is working, it's hard for it to be anything else but the off switch, IMO.
