Turbo Q&A

1. Problem :

Today while driving, I heard what sounded to be excessive winding coming from the front of my engine, I think the turbo. I can hear it spool up really loud and the spool down when I let off of the diesel peddle. At idle or any RPM at or below cruising, I cant hear a anything unusual. Put the peddle down and it gets loud. I took off the intake hose and there does not appear to be any play in the turbo bearings. There was a little oil on the lip of the turbo shroud which tells me it is lubricated.

I THINK THIS IS THE TURBO, ANY OBJECTIONS TO THIS ladies and gents?

2. Stock/refurbished or aftermarket turbo?

I am not looking to make this a tractor puller but I am going to add superchips, exhaust, K&N, and maybe new injectors.

Yes, I would agree that is the turbo. If you put on an intake and exhaust, it will get louder. Stay away from k&n in my opinion, yes they flow lots of air, but they also let in LOTs of dirt. Got with a afe, s&b, etc. something that filters the air.

#2. So you're looking for a turbo? The stock turbo is good good for about 35 psi and can make a decent amount of power before needing a bigger/better turbo. Buy a edge/attitude or smarty, you'll be amazed at how it wakes these trucks up.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Suggest look for the air leak. Hoses clamp or intercooler is leaking. JMHO
You said no excees play in turbo and no oil issues.

I would agree. Check the intercooler boots also, they are bad for getting leaks.

Have you done any mods to it lately?

Does not sound like the turbo is going bad. IMHO

A way to check for leaks: First be very careful and make sure the truck is up to operating temps and the grid heaters are NOT cycling. Use a can of starting fluid and spray in the suspected areas, i.e. around intake gaskets, around the intercooler, around intercooler boots, and anywhere else you could think it would be possible to have an air leake. If there is a leake the motor will rev up slightly. But please be very careful as this can cause engine damage if not done properly.

Good Luck
Cory

Are you talking on the suction on the compressor? The compressor wheel should not have oil on it, it is to be oil free air. There is to be clearance on all faces of the wheel, so lubrication there is not needed. If you are seeing oil, you have a leak.

Since you said from the front of the engine...could it be a locked up fan clutch? My '92 was making a noise similar to what you described and thats what ended up being wrong with it

I was trying to diagnose the problem today. Usually in my experience you can hear a turbo through the exhaust when it is starting to go bad. I dont really hear anything abnormal. I also found that i dont hear anything when I am going dow the road until about 2000 RPM. Then it sounds like the door opens and it gets loud. Any ideas?
