Trying to settle bill with dealer

A month or so ago, I had a failing tach, which led me to believe I need a new CMP sensor. In addition, the truck would die periodically after the tach jumped around and lurched - but it wouldn't die all the time. I pulled the P0341 code at Autozone before I took it into the shop thinking I needed the CMP sensor.
Got a call from the dealer saying it wasn't the sensor, it was the computer. In addition to the p0341, they also pulled p1689. It was their determination that both codes, when traced, led back to the ECM.
As you can imagine, I was a bit skeptical, and went to talk to the diesel tech to make sure he was on the up and up. Spent 45 minutes talking to him and he assured me that he was 100% sure it was the ECM. So, they replaced the computer, charged by 1004 for the computer and 200 for diag. and labor and sent me on my way. Within 24hrs, the truck lurches and dies. Started back up and got me to Autozone, where i pulled 0341 and 1689 and proceeded back to the dealer.
They checked it out again and had no idea what was going on. They replaced the CMP sensor and drove it for a few days to check it out. No problem. I went and picked it up, they refunded me the 1004, and told me to drive it for a few weeks and see how it does. I've driven it for three or four weeks now with no problems.
Now comes settling the bill for the work. My thought is, if they had diagnosed the problem correctly the first time, I would owe them for daignostics, labor, and the CMP. I am sure they are going to want additional money for additional diagnostics and labor, but that's because they messed up the first time.
From what I can gather from comments made here and elsewhere, the CMP should have been the first thing to replace. The ECM should have been replaced only if the codes always came together, which they did not.
Any thoughts on the strategy for getting out of this without paying an arm and a leg. At this point, I'm 200 or so from the original diagnostics and labor, so I guess I hold the cards, but I'd rather avoid a fight if I can.
Any thoughts would greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sam

I thnk you may be making a little more out of this than you need to. Being at a dealership I would say that you are correct in that you only will owe for the sensor and the install time to put it in. Being that it was a comeback and they did not fix it the first time they will not hold you responsible for any thing more than that. That's how we work here anyway and that's should be how they work. There are even times when we have eaten the entire bill on something like this just because of inconveinience to you as the customer.

Hey Travist,
Thanks for the input, I hope you are correct and I am making too big of a deal about this. I just got a bad impression when I talked to him last.

Expensive Bills from dollarships

Hey I have always run in this. They couldn't diagnose a failed lift pump. An engine that has never put out the HP that it should have and everyone else has. I am into this junk for about $12,000.00 and 39 visits to the different cry slurr and cumins shops. Thanks PR. GRO.

settling ?????

Well you might be one big happy guy if ........? I THOUGHT THAT THERE WOULD BE MORE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE ON THESE SITES. Just be glad that you got one that works! Well for a long time I was under the hope that if I gave them the right info they would ( want to fix the truck). The engine has been gutless since new and it has always been for ME to find the info and me to prove that it isn't giving me the power that is should. The diesel tech where it came from said that 130 rwhp was " about right" The dollarshop( In Prince George) and others and cumins have had it 39 times. to the tune of some $ 12000.00 dollars. I have seen the cause and power booster says that it is for cryslur, cryslur customer service say that the dollarshops have the technology to fix it. The dealershops , cumins chryslurr have alll pointed to the left and left me in the middle. None have proved to me that they have a clue what to look for or to follow instructions. in the interum it is very easy for you to pass me on the highway if you are pulling a trailer so smile as you pass. So the court is next for me also.
