Never Settle for Dealer Prices on Parts

My backup lights have been coming on only sporadically so I test the backup light switch and it's clearly the problem. I call Autozone with the year, make, & model of my truck and they don't list the part. No surprise to me since it seems like an uncommon part. I go to the local Dodge dealer, they've got the part for $78 out the door, you've got to be kidding!! I ask for the OE part number and go back to Autozone. Now, with the OE part number Autozone can do a different part search and yes they can get the part for $38 out the door.

Here's the take home message: never settle for buying replacement parts from the dealer at outrageous prices even when it seems like the dealer is the only place that handles the part. Get the OE part number and go to your local parts store, they can do a parts search using OE numbers and get the part at a fraction of the dealer price.

Just for the hell of it check this web site www.moparpartsamerica.com put in your part number and see what the cost is. It got the upgraded steering linkage for 214.00. The dealer in my area was trying to get 600.00

I just went to www.moparpartsamerica.com as dogcamo suggested. List price for the backup light switch $67.70, my price $45.07 plus shipping.

Yup, it pays to do your homework

My dealer price matched, scratch that, beat Mopar Parts America for the steering upgrade after I took them a verifiable parts list and website. They too originally wanted over 6 for it.

Definitely approach the dealer parts counter and ask if they'd consider price matching. Sometimes they can sometimes not.

I bought a replacement backup light switch from Quad4x4 for around $25.

Did some research and believe the Standard Motor Products switch p/n LS-202 will work for the NV5600. Less than $20 at most auto parts stores.

I just wanted to say that it sure helps when people post the part# like this above. Oftentimes when I do a search for a particular part, all I can find is that it is available at the local auto parts but have no part #.

Dealers charge a bit more for parts so they can perform service work at great low prices

Like an oil change for $175 or tire rotation for $80

For future reference, the Dodge part number for the NV5600 back-up light switch is 56007270. This is equivalent to the back-up light switch that Autozone sold me which is a Wells CR419.

I figure since I'm paying all those nice high taxes I sure as hell ain't gonna pay any more money for a part from the dealer that gets my my tax dollars anyway. On another note until dodge and chevy get there stuff together I dont think they will get another dollar out of my pocket, guess that leaves the dark side as the only alternative.

Okay, MikeyB inspired me to do some more research. According to what I found, the Standard Motor Products LS-202 won't work on the NV-5600. However, the SMP LS-285 will work on the NV-5600. There seems to be a whole series of these switches that look alike but have different SMP part numbers, I have no idea why the LS-202 doesn't work. In any case, the LS-285 is currently available thru Amazon for $18.91 plus shipping:

http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Motor.../dp/B000C81JGO

Now that I see such a huge price spread ($19 - $78) for the exact same part which can't possibly cost any more to produce, I can't help concluding that the parts business is just another one of those rackets, buyer beware!!
