Trouble starting when hot.
Trouble starting when hot.
My truck has acted funny twice now this month. If I drive to town about 30 minutes highway running and I shut off truck at store for 10 minutes, it will not start, no smoke, nothing. Motor spins over good. This morning it was -21 ,started no problem when cold. Does this look like the big pump is failing. I waited about 10 minutes longer and tried again and it fired right up. Lots of power on Highway. Truck is 2001, new electric pump has 13 lbs when key turned on.
mine would do about the same thing but just gradually getting worse still had good power once it started. did it for about 2 1\2 years before my wife was with me when it took forever to start and she got imbarissed and let me get the hrvp. what i have determined that is happening is the electronics in the pump are hot and it is not getting the signal to turn on.
Had the same problem on my 99. I would drive the truck for more then 30mins and shut it off and it would crank over and everything seemed fine but would not fire. Finally I took it to my local diesel shop and they told me it was time for a new vp, they said and this will be a little shaky it was a long time ago. Something in the pump is getting hot and its almost seized up to say, which in return will not allow it to get the fuel needed. Anyways, in the morning or when the motor was cool truck would start up fine. When the motor got warm was a pain to start. Pump for me, hope its something else, but I would have that checked... make sure your supply pump is still in good shape that is what let my vp down. Bump the starter and make sure you here it running. Hope you get better news then I did.
Yes, starts excellent when cold. I loosesned #1 injector line and turned engine over to start when hot and some air came out than fuel and it fired right up. I also tried opening valve on fuel filter one time when it was warm after sitting for 20 minutes and some air came out.
I just pulled my check valve out of VP44 and I can blow through it with my lips with very little effort. book says 10 lbs is what it should hold. It looks like I may have found my problem......I hope...

Mine did the same thing with a fresh vp from dodge. They changed it under warranty and the problem was solved. No codes so I have no idea what was going on. It is possible that all that was wrong was a bad check valve at the vp. I don't know if they come with fresh ones on a rebuild or if they use your old one when they change the pump.
I think it fixed my problem, starts every time now, except for once last week, after parking it for 20 minutes it would spin over but no fire. I let go of key and waited 30 seconds than turned key for wait to start light to go out than I turned key slowly until starter engaged and it fired right up. I am suspecting my ignition switch might be failing.
you know I had a problem like this last year with my 99, it ended up being a lose injector line on the #6 injector and with the weather I gues the metal would expand and contract just enough to lose the prime but leak NO Fuel. I found this out when I broke down and change the injectors out. might be an idea for ya hope it helps. cole
My 99 was doing the same thing about 1 year after replacing the VP. I took the VP off and sent it to Oregon Fuel Injection for testing/rebuild. They said they could not find anything wrong with the pump. They put new O'rings in and shipped it back to me. (about $150 for testing/shipping/parts)
Ever since I re-installed the pump it has been starting 1st time everytime, for about 4 months! I wonder if it was a loose injection line as others have mentioned? It may be worth it to try to tighten down both ends of your injections lines & see if that helps.
Also, I was impressed that the people at Oregon Fuel Injection did not try to sell me a new(or rebuild) pump since the one I sent them was from a different rebuilder back east.
