Unhappy Hot starting trouble!?!

Ok this problem has been getting worse and worse lately. Today it took almost 10 seconds of cranking to get it to fire.

When the truck is cold, it starts great. Usually on the first or second turn of the motor. When warm (operating temp) it will take several seconds of cranking to get it to fire. Today I went into a resturant to eat and when we came out almost an hour later it took almost ten seconds of cranking to get the truck to fire. This has been the worst yet. It has been getting progressively worse over the past month. I have checked for codes several times and only get p 0500. The truck had a new Blue Chip vp less than 30,000 ago. I also have an Airdog 150 with new filters. Schied lightning injectors 15,00 miles ago.

I dont know what the problem is and am thinking its not going to start soon. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Could be injection pump controller going out. Usually causes a no start when hot. Next time try cooling down injection pump with cold water. If it starts then replace injection pump.

I just went throught this last week.. truck would start fine until up to temp. then i would be getting hard start. replace the cam senser, injection pump and lift pump amonth and a half ago. the only code i was getting was a p1689 no comm between injection pump and comp. even though everything was replaced under two months ago it was my injection pump. so im fighting for warrenty with them right now. so i hate to say it but i would lean to injection pump

You need to know as its one of the most important items to know for correct diagnostics. If by some chance your fuel pressures go to high it could be your problem as the vp44 does not like excessive fuel pressure and will have a starting issue. Fix the guage and go from there. Driving a vp44 without a fuel pressure guage is like playing Russian roulette.

This problem has been happening since before my fuel pressure sending unit crapped out on me last week. I'm almost positive it has nothing to do with the pressure.

I have no IP related codes though. I have heard of pumps going out without throwing codes though.

I had two vp's go out with out throwing codes, and both times it was the electronics on them failed. The problem on mine started the same way with it not wanting to start when warm.

I'm going to take it out to my installers shop tomorrow and let him run a diagnostic test on it.

Unfortunately he thinks the VP is on its way out as well.....

I had a similar problem and everyone was saying it was the IP. I know i have problems with my PCM (which controls a lot of the starting) so i just unhooked the batteries and let it sit a while to reset the PCM and sure enough it starts right up everytime now. I need to replace the PCM but at least that little trick will keep it going for a little while longer. Its worth a shot. Good luck

it sounds like the vp here is a easy test to do ....when its hot unplug the lift pump and try to start it. IF.. it starts right up shut it off you now know its the vp. ...a cheep temp fix for this is to use a Hobbs 4 psi oil pres. switch and plumb it in at the turbo feed line. wire up the lp to it so there is no fuel pres till it starts .once oil pressure hits 4 psi it tuns the lift pump on . 1 of my vp44 had this issue for 3 years before it died . maybe this will help maybe not
