transmission surprise

First off, 2001 2500 QC short box auto trans, ~250k miles.....

I foolishly thought that changing transmission filter and fluid was a good idea since I havent done it since I've owned it (50K miles). Pretty sure it received service before as it was a utility company foreman's truck. I dropped the pan and much to my surprise and dismay I found a piece of, what i guess to be, a C clip, maybe 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inches, curved, maybe 1/4" wide and 1/8" thick. Unfortunately I wasnt smart enough at the time to really look hard at where it came from.

Talked to the owner of the shop I use, when I do use a shop, and he had no suggestions other than that it was probably a clip holding something in but they could only pull the trans and send it out to be rebuilt.

SOOOO I assume that this is going to fail catastrophically and NOT gradually with plenty of warning, I know that it's hard to gauge when given that I dont even know whats actually broken, but I would like some opinions on whether this is a gotta do asap or a probably ok for a while, or sell the **** thing now!

thanks

I'd vote for a teardown now if you can! Sounds like a servo piston seal or circlip, but who knows. If everything still works good now, could save some hard parts on a rebuild now before the rest of that part works it way out. You could get lucky and it fail "slowly", but who knows! If you can't do it now, pay close attention for any odd shifting/noises or evidence of slipping. Good luck!

thanks, I think you are right as much as I hate to think about it, it does have some intermittant weirdness when starting out cold that seems more pronounced now than it was before but perhaps I am just more aware

Anyidea what I should expect to have to pay? 2K? 2500? more?

FOOOOOOey!

To say I've been there is an understatement!

See my post for pictures:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=250602

It turned out to be a clutch retaining ring. Can't remember specifically which one.

The rest of the ring was still in place but was in several pieces. It was a "wavy" ring (to act as a spring). My local tranny shop (trusted) told me not to use the factory part... his was better in material or manufacture.

If the rest of the ring had fallen out of the groove I would finally have had the excuse I was looking for to replace the 47RE with a NV4500!

I rebuilt my tranny myself... new frictions, steels, seals and gaskets. I think the kit was $240 at my local parts shop. The replacement ring was $8 or $10 from tranny shop.

Good luck!

A buddy of mine got the rebuild kit from the local parts shop at 'jobber pricing' and I picked up the replacement snap-ring from a tranny shop.

I borrowed a tranny-jack from a buddy and had to make a tool (piece of pipe with a section cut out) to compress the springs in one of the clutches.

One evening to remove the tranny (in my driveway... piece of plywood made the gravel hurt a lot less... and allowed the tranny jack to roll) one long night in the shop to disassemble, clean and re-build the trans and one late night (after work) to re-install.

Total cost of rebuild: Approx $350 CAD including fluid and one sheared cooler line fitting.

I'm not going to say it was a simple job... but it is possible.

Thanks North, I did some checking last night and today, one of the shops that responded told me $13-1400 to start and up depending on what they find. I was going to drop it and try it myself but I hate working under it in the street and I've never tried to rebuild one nor do I have a spot to do it unless its the garage floor
