Transmission shifting in & out of 3rd & 4th gears?

Lately I've noticed that my truck shifts into 4th gear around 35 when driving real slowly & it sort of bogs the engine down.....Especially if you're going up a grade or something.....If you don't get on it & you let the truck stay between 35 & 30 or so it will shift back & forth between 3rd & 4th gear many times like the transmission is confused.....Is this normal or does the transmission need an adjustment.....This transmission only has a little or 40,000 miles on it & just had the fluid & filter changed at 30,000.....Thanks

I have herd and others will chime in that bad grounds can cause it as well as interference off the alternator wires. checking all grounds can help, and some have put aluminum foil around the alt. wire. My truck has a filter that is sold by DTT that is suppose to resolve the problem. and I test drove a truck that did just what you are talking about. Hopefully it is that. Ed there is much said about this problem.

thanks for the information....i appreciate it....i need to look into the filter that you are talking about....i really don't know if that is what might be affecting it....weird thing is that it doesn't do it with any other gears except for 3rd & 4th.....it also seems to do it after the transmission warms up to about 155-160....

maybe i'm wrong, but doesn't the 47re have 4 gears + overdrive?

i have an edge insight cs hooked up to mine right now & the last gear it shows that the transmission shifts into is 3rd.....the only time you ever see it show 4th gear is if you switch it into overdrive......

i can clearly hear the transmission shift 1 thru 4 but my edge says that it's in 3rd gear?

does that sound funny to you or is this correct with the 47re?

thanks.....

There is a post on here about a month ago where the folks on here explained the shift events for a 47re to me. If you accellerate gradually, the events are 1 - 2 - 3 - tcl - 4 - tcl

thanks. i think it must be correct that it's showing that it's in 3rd gear when overdrive is turned off then....i only see 4th when overdrive is engaged....

Use the search to look up "transmission hunting". You find much information.

Could be a couple of things from my exp. 1. Bad ground at the battery or any other ground connection. Check and clean all batt post and make sure they're tight. 2. Wrap the alt wire w/aluminum foil and then wrap it w/elec tape all the way to the passenger side batt. 3. It could actually be your batteries. Last week, I had two bad AZ duralast gold series batts causing the transmission hunting. Just a few things to rule out before looking for "actual" tranny problems.

My '99 had the exact same problem. Had the dealer flash the ECM or PCM cant remember which but that was at 38,000 and havent had a prob since now at 100,000. I think there's a TSB ON IT.
