Transmission problem
Hello, I have a 2001 2500 cummins with a automatic. I think its a 47re. I drove it from Oregon to California towing a horsetrailer and a horse. During the trip I noticed the trans would start to jerk a little while in overdrive and my foot was in the throttle. I would ease up on the gas and all was good. I made it home just fine. I disconnected the trailer and the next morning my wife took the truck to run some errands. She said it went through one cycle of shifts just fine, then it started acting up. It wouldnt go into overdrive, so I told her to shut it down and start it back up and drive. She did this and it worked fine until; she came to a stop sign, then it started acting real bad. Now it doesnt want to shift out of first, and when it does it kinda slides into second. No third or fourth gear at all. When I put it in reverse it takes a second to engage and then I hear a slight ratta tat tat noise. When I put it in drive it also takes a few seconds to catch and then it wont shift out of second gear. The rpms will run up but thruck doesnt want to go. I sent the truck to dodge to be checked out, but I wanted someones opinion on the problem. Thanks
Did you check your fluid level and the state of the fluid? Burnt smell, dark colour etc?
How many miles on the tranny, last service/band adjustment etc?
I think we can go from there....

Agree with A M., always start with the simple stuff.
Other than the noise...many of your symptoms sound like low fluid level, but that would usually be worse when cold?. Remember on a Dodge - you hold the brake and run through the gears...1,2,drive,N.....than check the level while running - in neutral.
Good luck with your dealer! Don't spend big bucks without checking back in here.
List your trucks details under "signature" so we know what you have.

The trans fluid smells slightly used, but not really burnt, and its still red. It was overfull by about a quart. The trans has 66,000 miles and was last serviced by me using mopar parts. This was about 20,000 miles ago and I didnt adjust anything
