transmission problem
transmission problem
Hello,
My brother and I decided it was time to upgrade his transmission when his truck kept popping out of lock-up sooner and sooner. Initially under hard acceleration, then accelerating up hill, then just normal acceleration at 40mph it would come out. Anyway, we bought a triple-disk converter and a 'towing' valvebody. Installation went fine for both with no hiccups, but we did find what seemed to be about an inch long piece of a snap-ring. We chose to ignore this because the truck had been shifting perfectly fine, just wouldn't hold lock-up (figured just the converter was the issue). Well after everything is buttoned up and the fluid is in (let it idle in neutral a bit to get fluid circulated), we get excited to finally get power to the ground.
Heres the problem:
Put it in reverse and back out of the drive way, everything good so far. Put it in D and truck stalls quickly and shuts off. Started right back up and put it in D and truck starts off in third gear. We can manually put the truck in 1, 2, and D(3rd in this case), but the transmission will not shift on its own nor go into overdrive or lock-up. We adjusted the bands to spec, as well as the shift linkage and still no dice.
So in an attempt to isolate the problem, we install the old valvebody which was not broken before. We test drive again and same problem, so now we are confused and frustrated.
Truck: 1999 SRW 3.54 rear , 47re, previous owner installed banks high ram and seems to have tuned the ecm somehow because truck smokes a bit under hard accel and has a dr.performance bumper sticker(dont know if the dr.performance tune? is installed) had overboost codes.
Please provide any information that may help, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the truck does have 180k miles, could the new valvebody with its higher pressure vs the old worn one have knocked something loose or forced something already on its last leg to break?
