my truck has been downshifting up shifting when trying to go into overdrive, i am keeping my foot the same and not making it do that, also i have put an additional ground on the trans and changed the speed sensor. when i reset the computer it stops but not for long, does anyone have any ideas of which this might be? oh and it only does this in overdrive. thanks

 

My truck was having a shifting problem that was 2-3 and to overdrive. After 2 computer flashes that a dealer said would fix it and after the dealer said the trans was bad and needed rebuilding I took it to a trans shop that had some one who knew what he was doing. The trans shop found I had a broken wire in the harness going to the trans. This has fixed the problem so far, about 2 years LOL

 

bout three years ago my 01 started jumping from o.d to third. son of a gun almost covinced me it was normal shift characteristics , but i knew better, thus began the chase. took it to the dealer's shop and after they flashed the comp. i drove home 200 dollers lighter and still had the problem. next stop a transmission physician. he drove it and was convinced there was a fueling issue. i was cnfused at this point. after talking to several local diesel enthusiast around here , i left it in the hands of the areas most reputable diesel guru. in a couple of days he called and he was covinced i had a combination of issues, leaning strongly toward a fuel problem. he convinced me that by replacing my vp44 and installing dodges lift pump upgrade , the problem SHIFTING would heal itself. i bought in to that and two weeks later and 3000 dollars lighter as i drove away from his establishment, my dodge shifted from o.d. to third to o.d. to third to o.d. to third o.d. ,well, you get the picture. a friend went online for me, because, my computer money was tied-up in fuel pumps. ther was a common fix out there that dodge people had discoverd. the pcm wiring was routed close to the back side of the alternator, and this unsheilded wiring was picking up interference form the alternator. this system utilizes small voltages to send it's signals to SHIFT. so slide a piece of wire braid sleeving over this harness and solder a sturdy ground wire into the braid , long enough to reach over to the metal fender. burnish the attachment point real good. connect that up and she will shift as advertised. be sure to slide some heat shrink over the steel braib sleeve. three years and my goat goes into o.d. between 45-50 m.p.h. under regular driving. try it . its cheaper than a fuel pump or tranny. later, greg.

just thought i'd let yall know that i put aluminum foil around my alternator ground wire that runs to the battery, and i put a ground on it and it so far has fixed the problem, i'm going to give it another week or two to come to a conclusion, but so far this was the cheapest fix if it really works!

 

it may be simple as cleaning your battery cable and putting new ends on them my 99 did the same thing,replaced batt cables and problem went away.its one of the cheaper places to start.

 

ok, well if this doesn't work in 2 weeks or so then thats next thanks

 

just giving an update about it if anyone was wondering, the aluminum foil worked great and i don't have the problem with the torque converter any more and now my trucks shifts smoother and firmer when i slam it

 

Been fighting mine for 11 years and 450k miles. Done all of the fixes. Finally I think I got the fight one. Get the $20 noise limiter coil for the APPS wire to the PCM. If you did rewire of that wire, undo it first. Still have other apps voltage and cruise control issues but it cured the lock up issue, I think for good this time.
