Transmission drain plug

Has anyone ever drilled and tapped their transmission pan for a drain plug?

Thanks!

I put a drain plug in mine but I took my pan off and welded it in. I was concerned about the pan being thick enough to have enough threads to hold. My pan was easy to get off and I needed to change the fluid anyhow. I know its messy to do this but after adding the lug its easy and not messy.

Yep, no way the pan is thick enough to tap, leaves you pulling pan anyway, and using a bulkhead type plug or welding one to the pan.

I never had any luck with the bulkhead style not loosening up.

Weld or get an aftermarket pan with increased capacity and a plug already in it.

The thickness was my concern as well. Thanks. I will just look into getting a new pan with the plug in it.

They have kits @ autoparts for this exact thing. Drill hole, insert plug and gaskets. Most of these create about a 1/8-1/4 drain. Under $5 and easy....mine hasn't leaked for 20k mi.

I have always wondered why auto trans pans don't have drain plugs, I can't remember aver seeing one of those filters blocked up.....although I am sure it happens.
