Socket for fuel filter change

Going to do my first fuel filter change (dealer wanted $115.00). What size
socket do I need to remove the top of the filter housing. Also I know I need
to bump the starter three or four times before starting , but is it better to
fill the housing with diesel before replacing the top ?

You need a 1-1/8" socket for the filter lid. Filling it up before you started it would help.

Thanks for the help. Also going to do my oil change. Are fleetguard filters
available from Dodge ? Are the mopar filters just as good(fuel/oil). I want to do my
filter changes this weekend and don't have a Cummins dealer close by.

The mopars are rebadged fleetguard I think. They are going to charge you an arm and a leg for them. Just use WIX filters for this change and then order you up some fleetguards from genosgarage.com.

I would guess that if you were extremely slow about the procedure, it would take you 10, maybe 15 minutes. Wow!!! I wished I could charge $460.00 an hour to change fuel filters for people. You will be so glad you are doing it your self. Not just for the money savings, but the personal satisfaction.

Saving money, personal satisfaction...and knowing it's done right! Why not put it off a week, if you can, and call Geno's today. 800-755-1715. Get the LF3894 Oil filter. Worth it to be sure your getting a Fleetguard Stratapore.

Yes a 1 1/8 inch socket does the job on the fuel filter lid. If your lid has the square hole in the center, (which a 3/8 ratchet drive will fit in nicely) DO NOT USE THE SQUARE HOLE. You can really damage the cap if you use the hole. Dodge later changed the lid design for that very reason, it is now a circular hole. Please don't go to a dodge dealer for Cummins parts. At dodge, its the same part in a Mopar box at 2-3 times the price that you would get for the same part at a Cummins distributor.

Here is a list of Cummins dealers close to Elk Grove. Got this from the Cummins website.

I just go to napa and use the napa gold filters. They are good filters. DC wants around $50 bucks for mopar fuel filter, napa has the gold filters for around $13 dollars.

The 1 1/8'" socket works if you have it...however a 10" Crescent wrench also works just fine...kinda have to hold your mouth right to lay it in there, but it works. Make sure the old O ring comes out with the filter

$50.00 is crazy!! I just did my oil and fuel filter last week. I use Fleetguard filters P/N LF3894 for the oil and FS19579 for fuel. Got them at the local Fleetpride/Fleetcare. Paid $13.29 for the fuel filter and $11.40 for the oil filter.

Reboxed or not a fuel filter is not worth $50.
