Rough idle and black smoke after head gasket
Rough idle and black smoke after head gasket
Hello, we'll the head gasket finally went out on my 01, 300,000 miles so not to upset about it. Just leaking coolant from front of head. So I took the truck to a recommended shop in town to change out gasket, since I work in the oil field in North Dakota. I had them install arp head studs and new valves, and springs and asked him to put the best head gasket in that money can buy. Well 3 weeks later they call and say its back together but idles very rough and said my injectors are bad. So had him install new stock injectors with took another week and now it still has rough idle and it smokes black at idle and is hard to start. Now he wants to put an injection pump in it. So I said the heck with that and told my wife to go get it tomorrow. Oh and I also had him install a quadzilla adreneline. What do you guys think happens to my girl, and what can I check when I get home on Thursday. Thank you
wow... sounds like you got hosed!
They may have installed the quadzilla incorrectly... the first thing I would do is tale it off to return the truck to "stock" then begin troubleshooting... black smoke at idle means too much fuel and or incorrect timing.. do you have a fuel pressure guage? how about an aftermarket lift pump? I would then look at the valve train and make sure everything is up to snuff... once you getting running well.. install your quadzilla... not sure if the quadzilla requires them to tap the injector pump or not... if it does then I would check that area as well

Hi iwhitne I do have a holly lift pump installed, ya pretty sure I got hosed. I wish I would have had time to do the head myself. I will take the quad off first thing and go from there. A buddy of mine suggests that i try a intake air temp sensor. Do you guys think that it could be causing my issues?
Truck is back to stock. They never did get it to run with the quadzilla hooked up. The codes that came up in the odometer window are pcu: 1682, 0500, 1693 (companion code) ECU: 0112, 0230, 1693. Fuel pressure was tested at the shop and each injector was getting enough fuel. It wouldn't start at the shop without a shot of propane. On the drive home it had almost no power and coughing real bad at low rpms. When the rpms got up to around 2200 it smoothed out some and the smoke wasn't so bad but as soon as the rpms dropped below 2000 it spit and sputtered and smoked again. It died once and I had to hold it to the floor to get it started again. All of the obvious was checked by the shop. Also I only heard the turbo spool up once on the way home. Any ideas are much appreciated!!

blockage in the intake would be my first impression of the problem. Normally in the downstream side of the intercooler. Occasionally in the upstream side.
Second problem I have seen, is when guys set the valves 180 degrees from where they should be. They do the 10/20 right, just in the wrong order. Causes exactly the same problem.
Good luck with it

Thank you you for all of the responses, I sure hope it is something a silly as a rag in the intake. But the incorrect valve setting would be a simple fix as well. We had a pretty good wind a snow storm role through the area yesterday and its still kicking pretty good this morning so after we take the kido to school were going to tarp up the truck and get to work on it. i will keep you guys updated
Well we got the old girl going. Im not real sure what process the shop used to set the valve lash but they were all very very tight. when i set it to top dead center there was not one loose rocker. so i set them to 10 and 20,touched the key and she purred like a kitten. well until it went into 3cyl warm up mode as it was only 4 deg while we did this. So thank you very much for all your responses.
Now time to install the Quadzilla

Good deal! Now the fact that it was 4 degrees when you set them you might want to make a note to go over them again in the summer when the temperature is a little more normal.
They might get a little on the tight side as the weather warms up. Or you could warm it up a little and recheck them but I am guessing that you have had enough of that! I have to put a lift pump on mine and it is 40 degrees and I m complaining.
