replaced vp44 today

Just to let everyone know, I got 199,100 miles out of my original injection pump. I put a new Carter lift pump on two weeks ago. I called cumminsstuff.com on monday and had my vp44 this morning and put it on this afternoon. My symptoms were hard starting with no loss of power. The best part is I didn't have to get towed in or was stranded. Oh my truck is a stock 98.5 with auto tranny.

Glad to hear your install went ok. May I ask, was this a difficult project? Any special tools involved or anything? How about pump timing / priming, ect? Or did you just install, plug in, hook the lines up and hit the key ?

If my VP ever went out, I'd like to be able to replace it on my own.

Actually I installed the pump myself (I don't claim to be a mechanic). The only special tools that are needed are a 27mm socket for the pump shaft gear nut, mirror so that you can see the gear nut and the "pin", a gear puller (a "T-bar" puller is what the Haynes book recommends), I have a good assortment of regular and deep sockets. I just took my time went by the book and it took me about 4.5 hours, the pump cost $975.00+s/h and tax, there was also a $400.00 core charge. As far as priming I just cracked my lines, made sure I had good fuel flow, tightened up back up and the idle smoothed out. I'm glad I didn't pay someone to do it, its really pretty easy the hardest thing is lining up that key for the shaft. I have a had 2 factory lift pumps and the one I put on the other day was my first Carter.

GlennRMK,

I don't know whether the Carter lift pumps are any better but after two from the dealership I was ready to give them a try. I like it so far. I got mine off of EBAY a guy from Lubbock has them from around $168-$176 and shipped the same day.

Thanks mdj:

Can you tell me, is there any type of warranty that came with your new VP or Carter for that matter ?

Also, if you dont mind, .....where did you purchase your VP at ? That seems like a pretty good price, from what I've heard.

SilverRam01,

The VP I just put on is a remanufactured (by Bosch) pump it comes with one year warranty. I bought it from cumminsstuff.com (Edwards Equipment) 817-573-7755. The Carter lift pump.......I'm not really sure about the warranty. When I ordered the VP it has had like 5-6 updates to it since mine (98.5). I hope this one lasts a little while, it sure has made a difference in my power and mileage.

Guys check your fuel tanks for exposed open elbows on top in concaves on tank top. This is a old problem and is still present on the 06. These exposed elbows can let crud and water into fuel tank. If water fills concave it will submerge the elbow. Fix - Two foot 1/4 in.fuel line pluged on elbow with small inline filter on end of line . Let hang down. With line on elbow you can blow into tank easely but you cant suck out. Theres a one way check valve on elbow that wont allow fuel to come out when you fill tank full, but it sure will let crud in. Crud in tank can sure take out lift pumps.
