R&R inner timing cover gasket and front crank seal??

I was quoted 400$ in parts and 1000$ in labor to do this job...I went to NAPA and they quoted my 45$ for the gasket and seal kit. I think someone is trying to hose me on this one..Anyone done this job..or had it done ? Any advice is appreciated. Doc

I did it on mine several months ago. I got the seal @ NW Cummins and it does not come with a gasket nor do they use it on a 24 valve anymore. They use grey silicone seal. I had trouble getting the seal to go over the end of the crank and had to get another one since I ruined it. The seal should come with a plastic piece to help it slip over the crank but there is more than one style and the one I had does not work as well or as easily as the other style. Somebody on a prior thread posted pictures and I could see how much better the other style is. With the type I had there is virtually no room for error and must be installed very straight to not catch the lip of the seal. Other than that issue it is pretty straight forward unbolt and bolt up again. It has been over 4,000 miles now and so far so good with no leaks.

If you truly mean the inner gasket, then it isn't that far out of line, labor is actually pretty dang cheap. I believe they quote 18 hours labor IIRC.

They said the outer gasket was fine, the inner needed to be replaced along with the crank seal. One guy said it would require removing the motor to be effective...???? I'm not talking about the rear crank seal...you can see when looking at it that up to the L is the outer gasket and down and inside is the inner...the oil comes from that area. So I am inclined to go with the previous gentleman who actually did it. I could not imagine 18 hours .....Doc

How many hours would you say it took, not including the wrong seal? I am for buying the shop manual and trying myself. Doc

If you are truly talking about the inner seal against the block I did not replace that one. I just did the front cover and crank seal. I read what you wrote but so many don't clearly explain exactly what they might really be talking about so I thought you probably meant just the cover. Seems you did know what you were talking about.

Probably not far off the mark. The labor for pump replacement is $500-1000 around here. If the inner gasket, which is on the block side of the timing housing , is the culprit it is quite a job. All the pump, vacuum and cam gears have to come off to remove that housing. You can do it in frame but you will need to remove the radiator, intercooler, etc... The front cover, needs no gasket and the seal can would be an afternoon job. I would do it myself, but not everyone would.
