questions

On the highway, should I try to keep the engine at 2000 rpm or as low as I can get it without lugging it in order to be kind to my engine?

Valve lash adjustment, When? Is it really necessary?

What do you think about using fuel additive? Necessary?

Idle at first start, a minute, or just take it easy for a bit?

Will the edge increase my mileage without harming any of my truck in any way?

Thats enough for now.

what year is your truck ?? fill in your sig so we know.

1. i wouldnt worry about it. revving is better than lugging

2. what year truck?? i think diff years call for diff mileages for this procedure

3. i use Howes meaner cleaner. its an anti gel aswell as a lubricator. i use it every tank all year round.

4. never hurts to idle for little bit to wrm up especially when cold out. i sometimes let mine idle 10 - 15 min if its really cold out. prolonged idleing is not good for any engine though.

5. since u ask about the edge i assume u have a 98.5 or newer 24 valver. i have a properly valved ( 12 ) truck so i have no need for the edge.... sorry i cant help you with this one.

have fun with the truck, scott

http://dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm is a wealth of information and should have answers to most of your questions.

The fuel delivery system on the 24 valvers is the weak link, if adding a box such as the edge, monitoring of fuel pressure is a must, to ensure the VP44 injection pump is receiving enough fuel. The VP44 uses most of the fuel to cool and lube itself. An article in the above link tells of reliability issues of the VP44 using today's lower sulfur diesel fuels, so a lubricity additive for the fuel would definitely help extend it's life. A pyrometer to monitor EGT may also be useful if using the edge.

Valve adjustment I believe is recommended at 150,000 miles on a 24 valve.

Welcome aboard!

I run an EZ edge and mileage hasn't suffered. I found if I keep my truck at 1900 rpm I will net my best mileage (this is empty).

Ditto on J BODY...........below 2K RPM keeps me at about 19 MPG at 60/40 highway/city.

If you check your valve adj i bet there is loose as a goose they all come that way (the book allows for a extream tolerance.) Some of us run them tight...I set mine .01 under the min limit..been that way sence the rebuild.
