Power steering capacity

I'm getting ready to change my power steering gear and flush my system and I was wondering how much fluid I'm going to need to fill the lines and reservoir. Thanks.

I bought a gallon jug and used about half a gallon to flush it 2 or 3times...Then refill it. Mine was really funky...

I pulled the return hose off and plugged the reservoir connection off. Then I would extend the return hose into a bucket.

Start the engine... Rock the steering wheel left to right until the pump runs out. about 2-3 seconds...

Then re-fill and do it again... I would do this about 2-3 times to be sure to remove all the old fluid out of the system (gear box, pump, brake booster, etc)

Then re-hook up the hose and refill the system. It will foam up a bit so re-check it in the morning.

It takes about 1-2 quarts to do this... But I got to admit the fluid last a good 30-40K now... Nice clean and clear fluid!

The method above doesn't remove the old fluid out of the brake booster or the gear box. Even if you do this a few time all your doing is diluting your new fluid with the trash that is in your gear box etc... It better to flush it out! In one hole out the other hole...

Well I'm not gonna worry to much about getting it all out of the steering box seeing as how that's getting replaced.

Not this time. The only thing that would have saved me this time is if I had listened to my parents and not taken my 7000lb truck four wheeling. Of course I'll never let them know they were right.
