P1693, Lp, & Fass...
I hate to post this question, but the dern Search is disabled. How I love the search, it answers questions a lot faster. Anywho...
The truck just turned 122k & I got the beloved P1696 code. I believe that's the code I got at 45k and the LP died shortly thereafter. I know what the code translation is: "DTC Detected In ECM Or PCM" The ole generic, run home to mama, something's not right code. But this time, the check engine light is coming on ... and I don't remember that happening at 45k.
Also, the tach started to fluctuate down to zero this morning as I was leaving to work, but came back up. I shut the truck off, and drove again, the tach worked normal.
So, here's the question. And with this question, I'm not questioning the quality of the FASS system, but for $145 (for the L.P.) I can be up and running with no problems ... at least for a while.
Last time I checked, seems like the FASS systems were $600+ (someone fill me in ... the Search is disabled). I could buy 4 lift pumps for that. This last L.P. went ~80k miles.
I'd just like to know what the majority of you guys think about this situation. Replace the L.P. ($145 and not too hard), or go with the FASS system. I'm leaning toward a L.P.
Replacing the V.P. is a concern, but the last time I searched, HRVP's weren't very expensive. So, I could handle a VP loss if it came down to it.
Thanks guys.

Heh heh, I feel the start of another mighty debate. FYI I had a bad lift pump right out of the box and another that only went one oil change before it went south. I am very happy with the system I have now and because of the quality of the lift pumps I would recommend not simply replacing the lift pump. What you decide to use is your baby!!! Heh, heh... Good Luck
I drove my truck to lunch today. After about a mile I heard a very faint click about my left knee area. I naturally glanced down at the instrument cluster, and saw the tach needle falling to zero.
It stayed that way for 5 to 10 seconds, then I heard the same little tick, and it came right back up. I think what I heard was a relay in the fuse box area.
This has happened twice (that I've seen) now, and started happening at the same time the "Check Engine" light starting coming on (I get the P1693 code now).
Is there a gremlin running around in my truck?

You are having gremlings allright, but they are not going to help you decide what to do with your fuel system.
I faced the same, and decided that 1) I did not want to spend several hundred on a FASS 2) I did not want to risk losing another stock LP while hunting far off in the mountains 3) I understood enough about what I need to make my own system. Therefore, I spent about $200 and have a Walbro setup that is more reliable than a stock LP and allows as much or more fuel delivery as any FASS, less the air separation system.
I know I promised to post my own cheap man's FASS system but the filter I bought was not suitable, and I got busy, so I fell through on that promise. I will recover some day...

first thing to do is to check the code again.... p1696 is "pcm failure, EEPROM write denied"
a brief description of DTC
"unsuccessful attempt to write to an EEPROM location by the control module", so i fail to see the relation with a fass

OK, I'm pulling this from memory, from like 2001 or 2002. That's when my first LP failed. At the first indication (lack of power & smoke), that I had a problem, I stopped the truck somewhere and checked the codes.
The code I got at that time was P1696, as I remember. But, I could easily be wrong. I don't remember what the code actually said, but it was a very generic code.
From a list somewhere, I got that P1696 means: DTC Detected In ECM Or PCM. I don't know where you got yours, but I'm curious if they mean the same thing or not.
I will mention one last thing, I am one of the Quadzilla XZT Beta testers, and have only been running the box a very short time. I guess it is feasible that the box is the problem.
