Out of fuel Gauge?

Friday night i was towing my car back from a race and while doing so the truck just shut off. No warning and the guage was reading at better than a quarter. I know i was close but when it reachs a quarter thats when i usually stop and get fuel. Anyways i got fuel and starting fliud and i was on my way. My question is how bad is this on my VP and are these fuel sending units a comon problem? Thanks

Definitely not good for the VP. My gauge is off so at about a 1/3 of a tank I better find fuel in a hurry. I usually never get below 1/2 because of that. In the summer I won't go below half just because the fuel will stay cooler for the VP.

the in tank sending units are known to fail... mine went bad exactly as you decribe.... the unit costs less than 50 dollars, you have to either drop the tank or lift the bed enough to access the unit.
there is more info out there if you do a search

Where are you finding the sending unit for $50?--when I inquired at a dealer recently, it was more like $400 (~ the same price as the unit WITH the in-tank pump attached, as I understood them)...
